Now that's one I don't remember at all - way before my time of island dreaming but I can well imagine it since I do remember the lolos being just BBQ drums along the water side of the main street through there. For years we were afraid to try them because we thought we might be imposing on something strictly island - what fools we were and oh what we missed out on.

Gert,

Zacchary's was a favorite place of ours also though I'm not sure how we ever found our way there in the first place since we stayed all the way out at Mullet but the island was a lot easier to drive around in those days. And if your wife worked there, she was one good waitress because in that place, the girls literally ran there buns off back then. Island time didn't seem to exist there and it was always packed any evening we were ever there.

LePavillion on Simpson Beach was another place we thoroughly enjoyed. It was a well kept little secret spot tucked away on the beach the way it was. We loved to watch the waves lap in and get caught in the restaurant lights - it was a very special restaurant and a very major loss. My SIL still remembers it along with Zacchary's and The Frigate at MBR as being among his very first island favorites back in late 80's. Did the owners of LePavillion ever reopen anywhere else?

Respectfully,

pat

No they didn't re-opened after the Pavillion. Jacques and Magela (very good friends of mine) get divorced just after they lost the place. He left the island a couple of years later after trying to open a French Bakery on the dutch side, she stayed for a while and was manager at Sambucca, then with her new boyfriend she tried to obtain a TV channel license from the governement, which they didn't get, so I think she (and her boyfriend) left to Antigua, to create a TV channel. I lost track of her then, it was in 2001.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Are any of you 'newbies" spinning smiley sticking its tongue out old enough to remember the original owner of Le Pavilion? and do you remember that owner's original restaurant in Marigot?
It was a little hole in the wall, open for lunch only, with the best fresh fish and local meals ever!
I won't tell you the name.
Let's see if any of you know or remember!

Gert, Yes I remember those very hard working ladies from ZACKERY'S. How about the man in the kitchen. What happened to him after the place closed and does anyone know why it closed. It certainly had plenty of customers. Remember they also had buffet night I think on Thursdays.Remember all the business cards on the bar wall. How about those two birds in Pizza Hot that walked on the tables. What was the name of the restaurant next to La Vie En Rose upstairs during the 80's.Portofino's was a great place for lunch and watching cruise ships. Remember the Cronicle's police blotter section and the reporter had his picture next to the articles.Remember when rental cars were dropped off across the street from the airport. Outside the original airport next to the entrance was 3 or 4 rental company windows. Also before the Pelican was built & then the original section & casino.Little Bay Beach before the Belair was built. My first drive threw Grand Case was Jan. 79.I recall the little beach bar on Dawn Beach was a few boards to put drinks on & coolers to hold cold items & ice in the sand.Remember Oyster Pond Hotel without phones or AC.

I'm definitely too much of a newbie to answer those questions! I guess when people start asking questions like, Do you remember when the new airport was built, I'll be able to chime in...cool smiley

And PS... the weather out here today makes me think we're on the island right now! Most everybody on the east coast is probably in their pool, in someone elses pool, or out there digging a pool as I write....

The man in the kitchen of Zachary's was the owner as well, "Big Steve". I think he now manages a country club in Santa Barbara, CA.

Anyone recall the guy who started a boat trip to St. Barth's business from Bobby's Marina during the 80's.He would hand out flyers & talk to tourists on Front St.I heard the IRS took him and his sons back to the US.....I remember how jealous I felt when meeting people and many small business owners who discovered SXM before I did in 78 during my first vacation.I kept thinking they must have a wonderful way of life .Remember when the only lights at night near SB were on the mountain tops & the airport search light. And how dark the area was between the airport & Mullet Casino.During my first night drive from Little Bay to Mullet Casino we saw only two other cars on the road.

Anyone remember when the departure tax was $5.00 or less.

Regarding departure fees, our first trip was in 1973 and would you believe, the fee then was $2.00 per person? And we couldn't believe we had to pay to leave....

I'm thinking that restaurant with the Palm Trees threw the roof is the wonderful MINI CLUB in Marigot.
