Barbara, Glad to see your back. Wasn't there a restaurant by Mullet in the corner pharmacy location called LaRosa (sp) yrs ago. If I'm correct did it move or just close.........Can anyone recall the first building they noticed yrs ago being built around SB. On the road leaving the airport towards the Midass intersection that blocked the view of the water.I first noticed the MCM building being built across from the Pizza Hut that blocked our view......How about watching planes land before the SSBB was built and became popular.

Does anyone remember the security gates that used to control traffic at the intersection to the Mullet shopping area before the Casino Royale building. There is a traffic circle there now but yrs ago manned security gates were in place.I don't remember how long they were used but could be a yr or two.

Bob
I'm not back yet smiling smiley
actually I head for home tomorrow.
I'm ready too....a month is a long time to be gone.

and I really have to work on remembering some of those things you pointed out.. it all seems , oh, so long ago and my memory is so foggy.
I do remember when that first building was built... that was land given by the government to one of their own and it began the process of all that filling in.
did we really watch planes before SSBB was built? spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
and I do not remember those security gates... got to think about that.
and the restaurant at Mullet..you got me on that one too.. was La Rosa first located there? I really don't remember.

dont remember LaRosa being where the pharmacy is-always remember it being where it is now in the back-perhaps it was and that is why the one in back is LaRosaII I started going to SXM in '83 and do not remember the gates and when I stayed at Mullet that year it was a Sheraton

I do remember a restaurant in the corner building(pharmacy) location during the middle to late 80's. I think someone said it moved to the rear so you may be correct. As for the gates they were only used for a short time during the late 80's I think. Speed bumps were installed too. The gates had to operated by a gaurd similiar to the gate at the Esmeralda & entrance road to Orient.I also recall gates and a guard who had two Dobermans by the entrance to where Frank Purdue lived next to Mullet Bay Hotel. My cousin and I walked up to the gates and the guard won't let us threw. This was probably 1981 and I haven't been back to that area since.

Bob,

LaRosa's may have been down in front in the late 80's - seems to me we ate there with friends then or perhaps in the early 90's - I really can't recall anymore. As I told a good friend, the mind is a terrible thing to lose!!

We used to stay in Unit 31 A1 & 2 at Mullet for years, just two or three buildings beyond the Grand Casino and the only thing I can really recall in regards to security there was one of those lift gates to keep the cars from heading up to the Hillside area at night. I'm sure you remember, back in those days many visitors didn't rent cars at all or just for a day or so and many stayed mostly within the resort and utilized those cute little buses. I think they got rid of the lift gate because it was an annoyance to the bus drivers but I could be wrong about that.

Regarding Frank Perdue, in all honesty, I knew Frank visited the island regularly but I never realized he lived that close to Mullet Bay. We saw him a few times at the island Market in Marigot but it never occurred to me that he actually lived there.

As more and more development took place all over the island, they installed those speed bumps throughout Mullet Bay for safety reasons. There were always a large number of walkers - we used to love to walk down to the beach at night and then out to Maho for ice cream - and it actually became very dangerous to try and do this. The bumps were a true necessity. By the time The Towers was built or 3-4 years after, walking became pretty much a thing of the past because of the regular flow of traffic through that area and from the safety/crime standpoint - a really sad occurrence for those of us who so enjoyed doing it.

Those were the days, for sure. Long gone, but definitely not completely forgotten.

Respectfully,

pat

Pat, I remember waiting for those white vans that took tourists around the Mullet grounds. Also those huts we waited in along the road waiting for the island time scheduled vans to pick us up.We really enjoyed the Frigate and the upstairs breakfast restaurant. I meet tourists from my area at the Golf cource bar once. They brought with them their own Absolute Vodka from N.Y. because they didn't know if it was sold on SXM, unbelieveable. The old Days on SXM

Anyone else remember how dark the island & the roads were in the 70's & early 80's.After passing the airport heading towards Phillipsburg I remember seeing just the red lights on top of the mountains. We actually looked forward to seeing another car on the road. When we drove to Mullet Casino once during the late 70's our eyes had to adjust to the lights in the trees near the casino because they seemed so bright. At night in the Salt Pond there used to be huge fire's set to burn the trash which provided light in the area too.Remember when time share was mentioned you only thought of the Pelican.

Speaking of dark, I remember when Anguilla was dark. You could look across the channel and see only the Eastern half lit up. The whole Western end did not have any electricity at all.
SXM had electricity all over the isladn but it usually didn't work.
Hey, that's not so different today either! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

The Mullet Casino in those days was the very small room then they built the grand casino up the hill-what was the name of the restaurant that was up there too-just past the casino? Did the owners/managers of the Frigate ever open anywhere else?

The owner of the Fregate was Mr Petit, and he also (and still...) own La Vie en Rose, and the now closed "Poisson d'Or" in Marigot, within few other businesses.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Philippe,

Thanks for that information and that would explain a lot of things. The service and the food at The Frigate were excellent and, IMHO, in keeping with that of (the now closed) Poisson d'Or and La Vie en Rose as I recall them, though I have to confess, it's been a while since we've been to LaVie en Rose.

There was a La (Le? and I never could keep them straight) Frigate that was opened along the water front in Marigot for a few years - I'm thinking we only went there once and it was some where farther down the street coming from LVER but before you reached BobP's favorite. Was that another version of The Frigate of MB fame or a totally unrelated venture? It was only there for a season or so as I recall.

Respectfully,

pat
