So was the area that is now Grand Case once a plantation?

Well, Babelfish translates it as "large puts", but somehow I don't think that's quite right!!

This post is really a question for Philippe.. There's a thread on another forum about the proper way to pronounce Grand Case. There are as many answers as there are posts . Philippe, can you write it phonetically for us English-speaking folks?

I truly don't understand why people have such a hard time understanding that every culture is not exactly like the US! Waitstaff in other countries do NOT depend on their tips as their main source of income, and therefore tipping is completely different there. It is incumbent upon us to learn the customs of the countries that we visit. To penalize an establishment because you don't u

Philippe, I was so hoping you would respond to this post! I think it is very important that diners realize that the answers they may be getting from the waitstaff at restaurants where the service is either included or added onto the check are not always accurate. Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people in this world, who will prey on the sensibilities of tourists, particularly Americans who

I don't know about your villa, but it is best to rent a car. Way too many places to go and see to rely on taxis.

Too, too funny! I especially love all the references to your dear friends on the island. However, you failed to tell the readers to be sure to tell them you said "hi", even though they probably don't remember you ten minutes after you leave their establishment!!

Vicki, is it Sol e Luna? I've never been there but I have read good things about it. It's no secret that my recommendation for a romantic restaurant would be La Vie en Rose in Marigot. Ask for a balcony table. It has the combination of ambiance, great food, and impeccable service. Sorry Barbara, I know that doesn't really answer your question, but I have to agree with Vick

Although a troll is unusual here on Go Beach, we definitely have one here. This poster clearly doesn't know Barbara and her position on crime on the island, and is simply trying to stir things up. I think the best thing we can do is ignore him/her.

Philippe, this is good information! Here in the states, we almost always can drive up to 10 MPH over the speed limit without being concerned about a ticket. You mention 1 KPH over the limit. Is it common to be stopped for such a small infraction, or is there a little more leeway?

Well, then I stand corrected. I have not seen that, but we generally eat at Kokomarina, Kakao, or Waikiki. I have not eaten at any of those you mentioned. Personally, as comfortable as I am with toplessness and even nudity, I don't think it belongs in a restaurant (outside of a c/o resort, of course). To each his, or rather her, own.

I have to respond to Carol's suggestion for St. Martin's dress code. I don't know if it's because you haven't been there recently, but you definitely have a different idea of what's appropriate than I have witnessed in my recent trips. I do agree with the sundress suggestion; I wear sundresses out to dinner most evenings. I do also pack shorts because that'

I can only help with the car rental question. I have rented from Kenny's and from Ace/Panoramic and had excellent experiences with both. A Google search should provide the website for both agencies. I'm sure others will pop in soon with the answers to your other questions. Enjoy your trip!!

You can buy the rum in many of the local stores, even at the airport. The "factory" is in Cul de Sac, which is on the French side of the island on the road towards Anse Marcel. You turn off the main road that goes between Grand Case and Orient, going towards Anse Marcel and the Radisson Hotel. After you pass the restaurant Ti Bouchon, you turn right onto a small road that looks as if

Instead of leaving my bags in the car, I keep them at the foot of the steps to the garage, so that I have to pick them up on my way out. Then I can put them on the front seat next to me, on top of my purse, so that I can't forget to take them in.

That's a good idea. If they're not already there when we get there, we'll definitely leave a couple in ours. We always use cloth bags at home, but we end up throwing away so many of those plastic bags on vacation it's ridiculous!
