Vicki, I've been reading elsewhere that Verizon isn't working at all on the island any more. This is apparently a recent development. I hope it's resolved before our Thanksgiving trip, because David's usually on call for work.

Barbara, is the traffic that bad? I thought it wasn't as bad during the slower season. Or is all the construction causing the problems?

It STILL IS a beautiful island! Much has changed, not all for the good, but there is still a great deal of beauty there.

Philippe, this is so encouraging! We spend most of our days and many evenings on the French side, even though we "reside" on the Dutch side when we are on the island. I am confident that the improvements on the French side will be felt on both sides!

I believe that August and September are the two months that a hurricane strike is most likely on St. Maarten. I believe this because someone I know who lives on the island told me that he leaves every year for those two months. Because of the weather situation during that time, tourism is very low then, and many businesses do closed for a month or more.

Vicki, does it say "tagged" in the subject line? I haven't seen any yet, but Verizon has a pretty good internet and network security suite that we have, so hopefully that will catch it on my end.

Don't worry about the weather for a couple of reasons...first there's not a thing you can do about it, and second, it changes from one part of the island to another. There is usually rain at some point every day, but it's generally at night or in the early morning so it won't impact your beach time. If you do get one of those rainy days on the beach, just head to another bea

Yes, I love the sundresses from Rima and usually pick up a new one each year. From now on, that's what I'll wear as a swimsuit coverup if I'm going to be stopping by the Grand Marche on the way home. Bob, barefoot in a restaurant?? No way!!

OK, I guess I'm overreacting, and for that I apologize. Pat, you certainly don't owe me an apology! I am glad to hear that others do wear shorts in the stores and feel comfortable continuing to do that. As far as the coverup is concerned, I guess I have always considered SXM to be a beach environment, and here in a beach town, coverups are perfectly appropriate in just about any se

Pat, my question really was a serious one, although I have to admit I don't appreciate being laughed at, and since I am guilty of two of these behaviors, then yes, they were laughing at me. I certainly don't behave in a boistrous manner in a restaurant, and those who do annoy me here in the states as well. It always amazes me how loudly people talk in restaurants, sometimes if there

While I am not guilty of most of these tourist behaviours, I do have a question about two: First, you don't wear shorts when you go shopping? Are shorts considered inappropriate attire in such a warm climate? And second, when stopping by the grocery store on the way home from the beach, it is not appropriate to shop in your beach coverup? In a beach town, this is very commonplace here in

I haven't been there yet, and won't go for the buffet because we're just not buffet people. We'll go on a weeknight when we can really enjoy Philippe's creations! I'm looking forward to it!

Yes it is fully open. The location is beautiful, in a relatively secluded part of the island with less traffic and congestion, but still close to Grand Case and Orient. I have not been in the hotel since it was renovated, but stayed there when it was Le Meridien, so can only comment on the area.

Barbara, I'm guessing the government doesn't help because they see they don't need to. Doesn't SXM Pride clean this mess up every year? It is a shame, and very hard to understand that the citizens of St. Maarten would treat their home in this way. Perhaps if fines for littering were instituted that would be a deterrant. The monies collected could be used to purchase garbag

Thank you Philippe and Barbara. Philippe, you and I were posting at the same time, so I didn't see your response before I posted. The Rasta place sounds interesting, so I"ll look for that. I see their email address on the picture of the sign, so maybe I'll send them an email and ask. On our first trip we bought a mango at the Marigot market, (that was in late February or early

Thank you Pat! Always good to have a first-hand and recent perspective!! I'm wondering how the growing season works there. Because the weather is warm year-round, are they able to grow the same veggies year-round, or does the rain impact that? I'm guessing it would. You're right, I'm sure Philippe knows! Barbara is not a cook, from what I've read , but she mig

I love to cook while I'm on the island and would like to make use of fresh local vegetables. We're there late November into mid-December. Does anyone know what locally-grown veggies are available during that period, and where I would find them?
