Actually, on the way TO sxm, going through Miami was a breeze. Coming back was bad but not disaterous, but it was on a Sunday and later in the day. I'd hate to try that mid week. In some regards it was worse than Chicago O'Hare. We chose Miami over San Juan because our daughter would not be happy in an ATR72 (prop noise), and the shortest layover was 4 hours, and some were overnight

Just got back Sunday, and we used Leslie at Kenny's. Great person and great service. The Corolla was just fine for the island. No need to rent a Jeep. His email address is listed in another post in this tread. He always responded to my emails pretty quick. Al

Just got back very late Sunday night from our first trip to SXM. What a great vacation. Stayed at the Pelican Resort, unit is owned by a friend. Nice place, although the road leading to it was a bit narrow due to the new construction on the Pelican Resort Condos. Got used to the driving in about a day. Wasn't a big deal at all. Did try driving up in Grand Case, and decided I'd

We did stop there, but the only pic I got was an ATR72 on takeoff roll. We went earlier in the day, and it looks like the busy time is 2-4.

I think that happened last week. BBB was open when we arrived on Sunday, and open at least until Tuesday. When we drove by on Wednesday or Thurdsday (last week) it was all closed up.

I'd also recommend Leslie. We just got back Sunday from a week trip, and Leslie was excellent. He was waiting for us with the car, and returning it was a breeze. Very reasonably priced.

Well, in 3 weeks we'll be enjoying the island. Just a couple more questions before we head out. Driving: What's the trick to surviving island driving? I've heard it can be challenging. Customs: Entering the island, what kinds of things need to be declared? I'm on prescription meds, but I have a copy of the prescription and a letter from the doctor. Dolphin swim o

We'll be coming in late August. Has anyone done the 12 Metre Challenge, and how much does it cost? When/where would I sign up?

Thanks for the comments everyone. Makes me feel better about the car seats. Pat, I might PM you sometime soon with questions about the 12 Metre trip (or lump the questions into another thread about activities). I've been racing for 26 years on many different boats, but never the 12's, although my brother got to do it many years ago in Newport, RI. - for a week! Will have to wait u

Since it sounds like they're after anything and everything, is my child's car seat going to be OK, or do I need to take that out and lug it around every time we stop - at the zoo, at the butterfly garden, at the beach, the restaurant, etc. etc.

Hi all, We, too will be travelling with a small child - 4 year old girl. We're at the Pelican Resort in August. I see it has a kids pool and playground (maybe not a playground as we know it, but at least something). How is the Pelican Beach? And do many of the restaurants around the area have kid's menus - even simple stuff like hot dogs or grilled cheese? Also, to Touch, Gov

Pat - thanks for the info. Edgar - Please clarify. Your post is almost as confusing. You have never been anywhere where it's a problem but it happens all the time on SXM? Does that mean you've never been anywhere off the island where it's a problem but you have lot's of problems on the island? Maureen - where do you rent from? I've read so many things about so m

Hi, We'll be visiting SXM for the first time this August staying in the Simpson Bay area. I keep reading about robbery, car break ins, etc. How bad is it really, and will simple common sense prevail? I live between Milwaukee and Chicago, and visit both regularly, so know about not leaving things unattended in the open. (Although some of the write ups I've read make downtown Chica
