there are a ton of stores and just about any one will have the items you mentioned [or none will - it's the islands mon ;-)] buy lots of ice though 'cause it will probably be pretty hot and humid.

It's been one year since we've been there and we're back on Jun 23rd. If it's still open, there is Sang's grocery on the same road as the cruise ships dock (right off the main street in downtown Philipsburg). We always stay on the French side and shop mainly at Market. We found Sang's to be great because they offer a large variety and if shopping in Philipsburg, we parked our car there and paid $2.00 - $3.00 for it to be watched. Also, our dive shop operator is just down the street too. Other shopping is available so you may want to drive around and discover what suits your personal choice. Great island, great beaches, and absolutely great people!

Marge,

I'm thinking perhaps the most convenient place for shopping when leaving the airport and heading to your villa might be the Food Express at Maho. Head toward the Maho area and it's just after the roundabout before LaTerrasse and Maho Sonesta Resorts. There's limited parking outside the market and plenty of parking in the carpark beneath LaTerrasse and they validate parking tickets but I'm thinking I would probably leave someone in the car with the luggage if I chose to stop on my way. We found everything we needed there on our last trip and the prices were no better and no worse than anywhere else, IMHO.

If you choose to go to your villa first, then there are lots of stores to choose from, but this is still probably the most convenient along the way there.

And while I would agree with the other poster that Sangs is a great market, I don't think it's even remotely convenient to the Terre Basse area of St. Martin.

Respectfully,

We will be traveling to SXM in July. We are staying at the Royal Palm, any ideas on where we should go to the grocery?

Also I noticed that you mentioned that someone should stay in the car; is that because there is a lot of car thefts? I have been reading the posts, but it didn't seem that big of a deal. I know that the Royal Palm has a secured parking lot, maybe that is why:-(

bakes,

If you're staying at the Royal Palm, perhaps your best bets for groceries would be either LeGrande Marche in Cole Bay or just after the roundabout heading down the hill into P'berg, or, if you wanted to head back to the Maho area, then probably The Food Express would be a good choice. We stay in the Mullet Bay area and last year found the Food Express at Maho/LaTerrasse to be so complete we never bothered heading to the larger stores. Also, many of the timeshares have small on-site minimarts where you can pick up essentials and it's surprising how much they manage to carry in these little stores.

I agree with Pat about Food Express-- and if you can get a parking space right in front--- you can probably lock and leave your car--- they have a security right at the entrance----stolen vehicles are rare I think but break ins are fairly common---I have seen some posters refer to Food express as a "mini-mart"--- it's much more than your usual 7-11 convenience store--- it is not as large as some of the other supermarkets--- but it has all the fixins'--- produce- dairy- meats---beer- wine (not a really big selection) and prices on a lot of stuff is sometimes better than US------e.g. full liter of Absolute?? $8.60----750 mmliter of Stoli was less than six bucks--I can drink to that----hmmmmmmmmmm- as a matter of fact--I DID!!!!!! chbpod

Staying at the Pelican Resort on Simpson Bay. What are the nearby grocery stores?

alreginfo,

There's a small convenience food store in the Pelican complex that surprisingly has a very good supply of items but if you're planning on being there for a week you'd probably be better off hitting the large grocery store in Cole Bay or on the circle heading down into P'berg. If you don't mind traveling in the other direction beyond the airport, the Food Express at Maho is still a very good option for you but the other stores are bigger and probably better stocked with more of a selection to feed those hungry troops. Remember, it's a very small island so distance isn't really as much of an issue as traffic and whatever you do, pay attention to the bridge opening and closing times because that can eat up more wait time than driving does if you get stuck in line.

Since your trip has to be drawing close, enjoy and have a great time.

Respectfully,

pat
:-) :-)

We are planning a trip to St. Maarten and staying at the Pelican Club Resort. Any advice on local restaurants or grocery stores close by.

There are MANY restaurants in walking/short driving distance of your resort. Too many to even write down. We all have our favorites and off the top of my head, Pineapple Petes (easy drive), Toppers or Toppers by the Sea, The Boathouse, and a few right in your own complex. There are just soooooo many! You should also try the restaurants in Maho as well as the Atlantis Casino complex.

Regarding a grocery store, there's the Peli Deli right on the property for quick items but if you're looking to buy lots, then drive toward the airport and then continue driving until you come to a circle. Immediately look to your right before you drive into the circle and you'll see a great small grocery store (as Bruce mentioned called Food Express) that should have almost anything you would need at semi-reasonable pricing. You can park right in front of the store but go slow before approaching the circle as the entrance to the few parking spaces in front of the store is a separate entrance. If there's no parking in front, there's a parking lot under the building (entrance is before the circle) and it should cost you only $1 to park and shop.
