Bob, from the angle the picture was taken you can't see St Barth, it would be more on the left... But if the weather was clear you may see Statia...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Actuall... looking more and more at the second picture, I do think my firts guess was the best... I think you can see the little hill of Mt Vernon just at the bottom left, with its pond partially dried out.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Philippe, I think its a picture of the area past Grand Case because I see an area that reminds me of Anse Marcel to the north point of SXM.

You are talking about Little Key Bay... I tought about it, but there is no ponds at all in that area and never were any.
Now, again... if my first guess was right, I just realised that we should see green key somewhere in the picture, and we do not see it... So, this guess is out of the table! dam...
Barbara, are you sure it is St Martin?...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

the second picture reminds me of the view from the old "Bertines" restaurant. But I have no clue where the place was! I know on the French side, I can probably get there, but giving directions - forget it!!

bertine's..wasn't that on the hill above grand case.in la savanne before you enter grand casae ?
AND P. Dee is st8umped..he has no idea.. he liked your first suggestion, but then I had a question.. when did the petit's start that excavation? and then Dee said that from that excavation, you can't see the sea either.

Petit started the excavation in the early 80's I beleive with Verdier. Dee is right, you cannot see the sea from the excavation, but you can see the excavation from Pea tree hill.
I don't beleive it is the view from bertine... we would see Anguilla in the backround.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

If Francois started that excavation in the 80's, then I am not sure that is what we are seeing.
I am not sure but I think these pictures were taken in the 70's.. the book has no publication date though

Like I said my guess of being Orient fromPea Tree Hill was wrong because green cay is no where in the pic...
But could it be Gibbs Bay with the little red pond and guana bay further down?

Kind Regards,
Philippe
