Ron
I think in those days the airport had no lights on the runway.
Speaking of no lights, I can also remember looking over at Anguilla and seeing their lights...on half the island!
The western half of the island had no electricity in those days.

YES! That's it, K-Dis!! And the locals sold their fruits/veggies outside. OMG! What a trip!! Also, I remember that planes couldn't take off at night.....no lights on the runway. And yes, Barbara, only 1/2 of Anguilla showed at night. Now that was weird. It looked as thought 1/2 of the island disappeared!!grinning smiley
Yup, loved Trivia night @ David's, too. We've met more wonderful people thru that Wed. Trivia night. David's was great! As was Sam's on Front St.
We used to rent a villa, right below the Summit, @ Sardinia Yacht Club. It was great. We rented from them for a few years. Great location. One night we walked up to a little restaurant, near where the Arbor condos are now, and I saw an Armadillo!! OMG!! It scared the crapola out of me!! Thank Heavens for my flashlight and it scared the sucker away. Geesh.....hot smiley
Ah.....those were the days.

Sardinia Yacht Club? that's where William and I were living during few years! Wonderfull location, but not during hurricane though! We went through Lenny in that house, and we were VERY shaked... Lost the deck, lost the pool, the house was lifted up from its foundation, lost part of the roof, destroyed the concrete of the wall... After this hurricane, everytime it was rainy, the water was coming out of the electric outlet... The house had to be redone totally. Since I sware we were not going to live on the water anymore. Water view is fine, but up the hill.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Airport without lights. Yes, remember one year a plane has an emergency and all of us drove out and lined the runway with our cars so that they could land safely.

Storm: there was no Internet, so we knew a storm was coming when we saw coast guard land at the airport. We all went and asked where the storm was and then went home and mapped it on a chart on the table. We knew when the storm was too close from the Sea and air,so we disconnected the down spouts to the cistern to save our water, cooked everything in the frig and had a party. Many families in the safest house. It was wonderful

Christmas Eve the tradition was to drive to Lands Radio and call family.

Life was GOOD.

The old sign from David's restaurant was hanging over the entrance to Peg Legs for years.

Hey, Remember Studio 7 and parking in the huge lot accross from the casino. I watched the MIT blackjack team playing blackjack for $10,000.00 a hand for hours. Ofcource at the time we had no idea they were from MIT.Anyone else remember the FRIGATE Steak restaurant in Mullet Bay.Or the building on Mullet Beach that served lunch. How about when RENTAL CARS HAD to be DELIVERED to your hotelbecause the TAXI drivers felt they were losing money taking vacationers to their hotels.Remember how the island was before time shares began.

I remember Studio 7.
Oh yea, that was THE place to go for many years. I always had fights with my teenage stepdaughter who wanted to go there at age 15.

and the Frigate Restaurant.. the best and I guess the only steak house on the island. They had a great salad bar.

and , believe it or not, I think that the law about not giving rental cars at th airport, is still on the books. Some cars rentals still will not do it.

Barbara, We loved the Frigate salad bar & steak dinners too.Remember the Chinese restaurant on the second level in Mullet Bay. How about the one lane French side bridge near Sandy Ground.Everyone waited for a car to pass and then you could drive accross . Imagine with todays traffic having a one lane bridge again.Or Grand Case without the by-pass road today.Remember the lobster salads at the West Indies Cafe (sp) on Front St.And driving along Front St and parking on both sides.

Barbara, Do you recall during the 70's & 80's seeing huge fires at night in the Pond accross from Phillipsburg. The garbage used to be burned there at night and the terrible odors that came out of that Pond. The DH article about odors around Simpsons Bay reminded me of the nightly fires.Another memory was being able to see the water around SB from the road. Each visit in recent times I would see a number of buildings being built. Now the water views are totally blocked by buildings.

Barbara, The first building I noticed being built on the water side was the MCM store/building across from the Pizza Hut.I new after seeing that building many others would follow. Do you remember LIMBO NIGHT at Little Bay Beach Hotel.Remember the hotels casino had 3 blackjack tables, 1 craps table and slots along one wall.Men wore jackets to dinner and in the casino.A great hotel until DIVI purchased it.

Barbara, I know you know the answer. Which hotel back in the late 80's did Pirillo Tours of SXM send customers on package vacations.
