St. Martin is not developed enough to have an organized transportation schedule for its residents or visitors. Those under 25 can't rent cars so they'll opt for destinations like Cancun where there is an organized bus system. If the rental car prohibits additional drivers, the women don't have a reliable means to get around the island.

Lucy,
Just to clarify a point, you can rent on St. Martin if you're under 25 but the rental becomes a little more costly and not all agencies will rent to you. I'm not sure the reason kids flock to Cancun is the organized bus system but who knows?

Lucy.
Being not "developed enough" to have a transportation system like Cancun may just be the charm of St. Maarten/St. Martin. If that make it a less than desirable vacation spot for the 25 and under set, well.......

It makes it less desirable for everybody, including the locals. Having to wait a long time for transportation or having to pay extra for milk affects everyone. Does it take a long time for water to drain after heavy rainfall? I heard that they had to close down streets because the water was too high. The healthcare system is not running smoothly and people can't use their cards at St. Maarten Medical Center, the only hospital on the Dutch side.

This is a travel board. If you travel to St. Maarten/St. Martin, you should pretty much know what to expect. Why complain after the fact? There is no place that is perfect. If you want to get around at your leisure while vacationing, a rental car is suggested. We just had a hurricane in the US and believe me, the water aint draining off to quickly. What is your point?

It doesn't take a hurricane for the streets of St. Maarten to flood. Isn't that sad?

St. Maarten is not as well-organized as it could be and the residents should try to improve the transportation system, drainage, etc. To those who like the the rustic appeal, they travel to SMX to spend their vacation depriving themselves of things they have at home. Maybe this is a good change for them.

Lucy,

We had a great time in SMX and never once felt "deprived" of anything LOL You sound very bitter Lucy..sorry you had a bad experience...everywhere you go has it's good and bad points the great thing is..you don't have to go back if you dislike it that much but you don't have to bash the place....chaulk it up to experience and move on...lots of places could use some improvement but sometimes thats what makes them unique. I sent friends of mine there a few weeks ago for the first time...they are already making plans to return...they had a blast..and got engaged to boot ..as the saying goes, you can't please all the people all the time......Again, we loved SMX...we had a wonderful time..the people were great and we look forward to our next trip...sorry yours wasnt a good experience!

While I am in SXM I don't believe I am living a rustic extistence by "depriving myself of things I have at home:. If I am depriving myself of work, stress, bad weather, hurried life, etc, then, ok, deprive away. However, I go to SXM to relax and have a great vacation. Is it Cancun? Hell no. Thank God!

peace

I did not see the flooding firsthand. A friend described it to me when I was marveling about how good St. Maarten was. It was her third week there and she pointed out that it was not perfect. She also made me aware of the fact that you should not exit a casino without being careful of your surroundings and that you should find a parking space very close to the entrance.

It's probably good for you to not see the badness of St. Maarten since it is acceptable to you.
