I agree, the second one looks like Happy Bay to me too. Don't know what the first one is though. Nice shots.

And in East Africa, we used to call them Flame trees, where a species of them grow around the coast in abundance. Sometimes you can find yellow ones too.

Wow, Grapelli, Brubeck, Hampton...that was some talent it attracted back then. And now, just the ghost of memories. I guess one is able to walk through the property to get to the beach like the folks in the video did ? Some of the beach looks pretty decent and quite private and unpopulated. Is Baie Nettle Beach Club still around ? or has it been turned into something else ? or become another

Sad to see it abandoned and looking so dilapidated. I remember it in its hey day, late 60s early 90s. Wasn't it used as an army base some years ago ? or am I thinking of something else ? The beach at 5.15 looks pretty enough.

Hi Andrea, I'm not sure where just yet as I won't be travelling until Sept/Oct this year, but mostly likely on the French side near Marigot

Does anyone know how available Free WiFi is on the island ? In the Hotels, bars and restaurants ? I am planning on bringing my netbook with me so I can keep a blog and journal and post them with pictures to various sites I belong to, but didn't know how available WiFi was, or how strong the connections might even be to warrant bringing the netbook at all. I will also google specific hot

Thank you both, Ed and Pat, for the updates. Yes, that was them - Ed and Sandra. I too will look to see if I can find their website on the web - if its still around. As time rolls along and things change everywhere, their SXM reports could almost serve as a bit of a 'Vacation SXM' time capsule. Cheers, M.

Ahh Ed, thats the name I was trying to remember of a poster from the fun days way back when.... Kipp n'Slipp. I always enjoyed his (Kipp's) posts. Wonder where they are now... And a recently topped old post by another poster of yore made me think of you and chuckle ! I won't say ... which. Gosh, those were entertaining days. Wonder where all these people are now. There was a

Speaking of locally made ice creams, does anyone know if that sweet old lady is still selling home-made coconut ice cream out of a wooden salt ice bucket, under a tree just outside Marigot ? Her ice cream was/is very delicious, not too creamy but full of coconut milk and bits, though a bit pricey for the amount you get. I hope shes still around.

Wow ! Absolutely beautiful Den. The sharpness of the images is amazing, considering where the pictures were taken from. Well done and thanks. Its fun to identify all the little spots I can see and remember.

Yay, I got one right, lol ! Thanks Jimandi. In fact I knew the area when I first saw the pic, but didn't know if it had a specific name. I recognised both the hill and the pond. I haven't been to SXM in ages but when I used to go, I loved driving in that area : Relatively peaceful and quiet open road without any development or crowds. A greater reason for remembering it was because t

Wow ! Those really were the good old days ! I can just imagine how pristine the beaches must have been back then. It would be interesting to see 'then and now' pictures of the beaches, taken from the same spot if possible, and compare what changes nature (let alone man) has brought to them. Thanks for posting.

Thanks very much for the updates Barbara. No matter the year - whether today, or 10, 20 or 30+ years ago which is for how long many on this board have been visiting (if not actually living there - lucky you !!!), SXM has always been a paradise in one way or another. Cheers, M.

I well remember the Sea View Hotel with the Genip tree (used to love eating them). Stayed there in 1987. Wasn't the 'Rouge et Noir' Casino next door or nearby ? Maybe still is... ? What about Town House villas (I think that was the name, its been so long), down at the near end of Front street right at the T-junction. They used to owned by a guy called Ernest, and looked after by a

Another new photographer here as well ! Bought a Pentax DSL in Dec. 2008 and have been having great fun experimenting and learning how to capture unusual shots with it. Will post links to some of them after I've had a chance to upload some more pictures, but in the meanwhile am really looking forward to getting some island shots in September. This is a great thread. Looking forward to the

The last week in August, 1985. That was the first time I visited the island, I had just graduated from university in June, and my best friend and I backpacked through 7 islands for 5 weeks before returning home and starting jobs. He had to return home a week before me, so I ended up having that last week all to myself in SXM and absolutely loved it. Of all the islands I had just visited, it was t
