what currency to take?

Hey all,

I'm a Canadian travelling to St. Maarten next week and was wondering what would be the best currency to take. The web site for the resort I'm staying at claims that American and Canadian currency is accepted everywhere. Now with the Canadian dollar being close to par with the American dollar, I was wondering what would be the best to take. I'm also curious if using Canadian dollars is common practice from other Canadian travellers visiting St. Maarten.

Thanks and see you on the beach!

the Canadian dollar is not widely accepted on the island although you can change currency at the banks.
I would suggest bringing US dollars and credit cards

Par or no par I havent ever seen the CN dollar accepted easily on sxm. Or in the US of A either for that matter. If it were me and since you have such easy access to US dollars in CN I'd change to that currency if it were me.

If you are going to the French side take euros with you rather than $$.The euro is 1.44 to 1.00 dollar. Also with credit card you are charge a exchange rate. Check with your c.c. company.

Coming from Ontario, we always bring US dollars. Our spending habits are typically lunch at beach bar (either side) and dinner on the Dutch side. Buy your American dollars at home first, nothing worse than waiting in a line to change Cdn to U$ once you have already started the vacation.

The only place to exchange CND$, on SXM is ScotiaBank. And they do have LONG lines.
