Actually you need a car with no trunk and don't leave anything in it. They will break into your trunk too. If no trunk, they can look and see that there is nothing there and leave it alone.

You will have to apply for temporary residency renewable every year. You will not need a work permit unless you are earning $$ here on the island. Lots of paperwork required for residency, and requirements change all the time. But generally you have to prove you can support yourself, have insurance, are not a criminal etc, etc, etc.
