By "alcohol" they mean rum, vodka, gin, tequila, whiskey, etc. California wine would be imported and would be more expensive in SXM than in the USA.

We carry travelers cheques and have never had a problem cashing them. We usually spend 1 or 2 at dinner, get the change in cash, and then use cash the following day. My husband and I have been going to SXM for many years. For next year we are looking into spending one week on SXM and one week on Antigua. Regarding our air travel, we can get decent airfares if we fly to SXM on American Airlines - then take a one-way flight to Antigua on Liat - and then depart from Antigua to fly back home on American.
