I believe you were the sympathetic woman who responded privately to me that I have our local doctor check my husband and son for dengue, after my gunpoint robbery post in April. They did indeed have that disease, and it was your heads-up, and my research on the CDC site, that allowed me to point the ER docs in the right direction. And to think you faced not only a gun, but a machete. God love

www.webmd.com/a-toz-guides/dengue-fever-shc Hope the link about dengue fever works. The St. Martin "epidemic" may be over, according to the Daily Herald, but if there's even one of the little buggers out there left still carrying the virus, then you've GOT to protect yourself! The CDC has some good info on the repellent and DEET strength necessary. And worrying about the

Hi Janet, You sound like a strong, balanced individual, despite the horribly sick individuals you've had to face. I'm happy you can still enjoy your time on St. Martin. I can't see us visiting that island ever again. Both my husband and my son were hospitalized right after our trip with what the docs are 99% sure was dengue fever. If you read between the lines on a lot of tr

Hi Barbara, Well, I checked out the symptoms online of dengue fever and they were exactly what my husband and son have been experiencing, right down to the rash showing up on the legs on day 3-4 after fever onset. I found out there have been some cases on-island - thanks to you. All of us were in a hospital Tuesday, and they admitted my son and husband, who were terribly ill by then. I'

Hi Jerry, The restaurants are the second best thing about the island, after the beaches. Hope you get to enjoy lots. We were told by a man returning home to the U.S. with family after checking up on the house he's building in Sint Maarten that a long time resident gave him valuable advice: Before sitting down at the restaurant tell them you'll only stay if they gave you dollar to

Hi Barbara, My son seems slightly better, with a slight lowering of his fever, as does my husband, and I'm about the same. I'm going to take some time now to responds to your well-meant suggestions. I will try to send something to the Herald, and will try to see if I can do that online first. I will send a copy to the on-island agencies you also suggested. Pat (the first perso

Hi Barbara, Thank you for your sympathy. Pat suggested the traveltalk site - I've quickly visited it but my head is pretty achey right now and I'll postpone a posting there a for little while. I want to head out and check up on our son first. I'm not sure either what sites would be most helpful to our fellow travelers, but any ones your own gobeach site suggests are fine w

Hi Jan, Please read my posting sent in today (4/27) with "our trip to St. Martin" as the subject line. We want you to be well-informed, and your concerns about crime on the island is a valid one... Sincerely, Kat

Hi Pat, I appreciate the sympathy and kind response. Right now, my husband and I are fighting off some body aches, lassitude, headache and (he only), a lowgrade fever. Our son, who had joined us on-island, has been in his own home in bed for 2 days, with a worse case of the above symptoms. We definitely picked up some nasty microbe. If we can lick whatever is bothering us, we'll conti

On April 17, our first night on St. Martin, our first visit on-island, my husband and I were robbed in Orient Village, at gunpoint. We were coming out of a restaurant, crossed the street to pick up some groceries for the next day, and heading back to our rental jeep. My husband unlocked my passenger side door and was heading back to his side (still behind the jeep) when a black man in a hooded sw
