it's safe to drive through, but I sure wouldn't stop there at night. If you get a flat, ,my advice would be to drive on your rims till you get to cupacoy or Maho.

How old is your son? I think that's gonna be key to deciding on fun places to take him and "what people" he'd like to meet. I've had some great bar conversations with locals, but I'd say age is pretty key in that idea.. If he's really young, I think the library has a story time like most in the US and he'd get to meet all sort of kids..
