SXM

Now here's a question that might make some of your eyes roll, but am asking anyway...why do the locals or regulars call the island by the airport code? Is it for the whole island or just the dutch side?

Just found that curious?

we don't call it sxm. we just type it that way cuz it's shorter.

I agree less letters involved and faster.

Actually I think it is the visitors and/or regular who started to write it that way, not the locals or residents. And to be exact it should be "sxm" when about the dutch side and "sfg" (or cce) when about the French side then..LOL
When you think about it is funny, because again I don't see myself writing about New York and typing jfk instead (or sfo for San fransisco..) LOL... but I guess we are all guilty when it's about typing sxm for St Maarten as I do too...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Tabby you made my point exactly, no where else do we call where we are at by the airport code, so I guess it wasn't as stupid as I felt it was at the time.

Thanks for clearing up the french side! smiling bouncing smiley

Actually the island of Nantucket is known as ACK - its airport code. Not unusual to see ACK bumper stickers. Most people don't know what it stands for. Like SXM you generally don't see them when "on island". Same situation !

I just follow my baggage. Airline tag says SXM, so that's where I go too.
