Ah, but annie, in your heart and in your mind you're still just a hot young babe and that's where it really counts, right?

Respectfully,

pat

Barbara, I used to love having lunch at the airport ROOFTOP restaurant while waiting for our plane to land.I'm sad so many of the old traditions are gone.

That's true... My god I forgot about that. Even better when their terrasse was open to public, before the decide to forbid the access.

My first trip was at the Sheraton (Mullet Bay) for 5 days with friends. I was amazed by how exciting this place called St.Maarten!! Then made plans to take hubby the following year. Booked @ Le Grand in Marigot! It was like being on a plantation! Each morning we'd walk down Rue 'Dread' to the bakery and get fresh croissants and baguettes for lunch. We didn't rent a car for the first couple of days, but we did for the rest of the week so we could explore the island. And EXPLORE WE DID!! Went to Oyster Bay Hotel and it sure was an adventure!! It was like the road to Hana! Narrow and unpaved. But, the views was worth the trip. In fact, we got lost and it started getting dark. We ended up Lord only knows where!! We pulled over and there was a group of locals on the side of the road. My hubby asked how we get to O.B.H. and one of the guys said, ' no problem, I'll take you there!' And, that he did!! We followed him to the hotel. Sure wouldn't do that today!!
Remember when you had to drive to a restaurant to make reservations? Telephone?? What telephone?? grinning smiley
I used to shop in a supermarket in Marigot that would close from noon-2pm. In fact, all the stores closed then, too!!
The LoLo's were grills w/umbrellas!! Awesome and fresh cookin' !!
One time we were @ Sam's in Phsbg with friends having drinks prior to our departure. Our friends were taking the Windjammer, so they weren't coming with us. We called for a taxi but lo and behold, there were no taxi's because it was Carnival and no taxi's were working!!! How do we get to the airport??
My brilliant hubby decided that we'd walk to the airport!! He wasn't even drinking....he doesn't drink. But, there were no other options because no one at the bar had a car!! Why did we get rid of the jeep?? Dumb, comes to mind.
So, we started our trek. Honest to goodness. After walking a few hundred steps I was wiped so I went into a little local bar and asked the young man outside if he knew of any taxi's that were working. He said he'd ask his dad, who was tending bar. His dad came out and told us there's no one working during Carnival!! However, he'd be glad to give us a ride!!! Imagine?? A complete stranger offering to drive us to the airport!! Of course, we accepted the offer. He told someone to look after the bar while he drove us. His son got in the back seat with me while hubby sat in front and chatted with this gentleman. It was the best and most memorable ride I've ever had in SXM....or anywhere else, for that matter. When we arrived at the airport hubby offered him some gas money and he wouldn't take it. He just told us to promise that we'd return. And we sure have kept our promise. BTW, hubby gave a $20.00 bill to his son, who, didn't refuse. He made out, that day!! This was in the early 80's, so a $20.00 bill went a long way!!
That was 'back in the day'........
Thanks, Barbara, for making me rekindle all those wonderful memories!!!>grinning smiley<

ps.....I'm sure I've opened a flood-gate.......more memories to return!!

One day Trip reoprt, Feb. 1993

We arrived in Phillipsburg on our Honeymoon, via RCCL. We had purchased an excursion of a combination island tour/snorkeling trip. We had to tender in, as there was no pier. There was a little store called "Bye-Bye". We stopped in and bought a canvas bag for towels that fit over the shoulders like a backpack (BTW, after many years of hard use, we still use that bag). We got on the bus, and within 10 minutes, we were at this overlook where you could see Saba and Statia. There were 2 cars there. 10 minutes later, we were through Simpson Bay and at the "airport". Another 2 minutes down the road we were at the Fabulous Mullet Bay Resport. 12 or so minutes later, we passed by Marigot. It was here our tour guide explained water was a precious commodity on the island, but liquor was cheap. He then uttered the now famous phrase , so, we stink and we drink.
15 minutes later, we passed by Orient Beach. The only comment from the guide was it was a nude beach. 10 minutes later we were at the Dawn Beach Hotel, where we had an hour to snorkle in the prettiest water we had ever seen. 15 minutes after we left, we were back in phillipsburg, waiting on the tender.
Total driving time around the island (in a small bus) 1 hour 15 minutes.
St. Maarten was the most beautiful island we had ever seen, and vowed to "come back someday". As those who know us can attest to, we did.

During my first trip in the late 70's we drove to Oyster Pond Hotel which was at the end of a dirt rd. by Dawn Beach Hotel. I remember Oyster Pond Hotel had about 15 rooms and no phones or air conditioning.I'll never forget we drove from Little Bay Beach Hotel where we were staying to Mullet Bay Casino around 8:00 at night. The island had no street lights and was very dark.We passed only 2 other cars coming from the opposite direction. When we arrived at the Mullet Casino our eyes hurt seeing all the casino lights coming out of the dark.Only the airport along the way gave off a little light on the road. Those were the DAYS. Bob

Contessa; Was K-DIS the name of the market in Marigot??

Barbara; do you recall the days when the "big" jets were not allowed to take-off from PJIA after 5:00 PM??
