Cost of living

Hi People,

I am currently negotiating a contract on SXM. To answer the "salary-indication" question, I would need to know the regular cost of living. There are numerous posts on the subject all over the Inet, but they are all very subjective. If someone would help me with a short list, it would be very very much appreciated!
-Income tax?
-The cost of a 6 to 8 year old car, (suv or 4x4?), roadtax, insurance?
-A cellphone, contract-cost, a 10 minute call (mobile to mobile, local)
-How much for a 6Mbps dsl connection?
-a 2 person dinner at one of the better restaurants, 4 course, a bottle of wine?
-a suit (business), no need for Armani..
-a 15 minute taxi ride?
-various insurances?
-a bottle of Coca Cola? A can of catfood (they're not picky), a pack of camelfilters? A bottle of Jack Daniels?
-a plumber, hourly wage?

So, all in all...all current (Nov -2006) pricing and costs info is welcome! Thanks a million, and I'll make it up to you! :-)

HI again...

No-one can give any info at all? Even one or two on the list would help!

Thanks again,
MM

well, let me see if I can try.
a car..one that works..maybe $1000-$2000.00
cellphones.. different carriers, different contracts..different prices.... incoming calls are free. outgoing vary.
DSL conenctions... $60-$90 a month
2 person dinner at a good restaurant. $75.-$100.00 per person
coca cola.... 6 pk.. I think around $2.50
cigarettes.. $9-12.00 a carton
suit?? no one wears suits here.. not sure who even sells them
Jack Daniels Black......$14-$15.00
plumbers?? no hourly wage usually. usually they cost by the job. they ain't cheap though.

Hm, so the car is cheap, so are the siggies and the booze...and the rest is very expensive....Anyone else fill in the blanks? Thanks for helping out Barbara!

B,
That sounds cheap for a car.
Cigs are about $10 US
You can get a prepaid cell phone and control your expenses.
Don't know about Jack Daniels but Johnny Walker Red is $10 US Ltr.
The other questions are variable and depend on your needs.
I would buy the suit before coming here though it's true no one wears suits here.
You can get a bottle of Bordeaux for about $12 (even less).
Good Luck
Cheers

no, Irina, he is talking about a used cars. the car rentals often sell them for around $2000.00
If he goes to a used car deaaler, he would probably pay more.

Hi All,

thanks for the input! I would indeed go for a second hand car, since I hear the roads are bad, traffic is bad, and there is a chance your window gets smashed?
I'm amazed that everyone tells me there is no need for a suit. So board meetings are in "casual"?
Then there is the all famous house-rental question; I would prefer a house (not appartment), it does not have to be in the centre, it does not have to be ON the beach but a seaview would be nice. It has to be in a safer area, though I might get a big dog. I would need 2 bedrooms, but I would not need 2 bathrooms. A small garden would be nice....Now I hear prices from 950 USD to 2000 USD, but it's hard to figure what you get for that...
Any hints?

Hi Augie,

I found the Daily Herald a while ago, but the adds always seem to be from October....

If you own a car now, don't sell it. Drive it down to florida and have it shipped over for about $1500. (tropical shipping) Then you'll know it's a decent car. When you leave the island, you'll probably still be able to sell the car for a profit. (also you can pack stuff in the car for no additional cost)

also-
-if you have kids or a dog where you might need to run the A/C 24-7 for6 month.. factor in utilities... huge cost.
-food goes bad quick (ie-milk in a few days) so you'll spend a little more there.
-plan on nearly 2x the cost for most things other than booze or cigs. Good thing is they have nearly everything you'll need to live.

Heya Oz...

Driving it down to Florida is gonna be tricky, i'm in Europe...
Nearly twice the cost eh....dang...
Barbara's estimates where about 20% higher...different baseline I guess...
Thanks though!
