I am new to this site and am looking into moving to a island. Just wanted to know a bit about how hard or easy it would be to get as job and a affordable place to liv efor someone who is not rich or looking for luxury. In the sevice indusrty. Like a receptionist or waitress or hostess! Would save up enough for a start though and im not afraid of it being difficult to make like a local, just want to be able to lay back in paradise on my days off.

To obtain residency permit and work perit you will need to have a local employer to sponsor you and your application first. The employer will need to apply for your permits while you are still off island. To say the least it is basically impossible lately to obtain those documents due to the imigration rules in st Martin/St Maarten and off course it is not allowed for foreigner to just move down here illegaly and stay. If you do a quick search in this forum regarding living and wrking in St Marteen you will find several threads about this topic with all the answers of why it is almost impossible. The job market is saturated, local employement is up, they do not deliver work permits for foreigner that easy except if you have some very special skills that your future employer can prove they are needed for the good of his company...

Kind Regards,
Philippe
