Dear Fellow Animal Lovers,

I am writing to ask for your help in spreading the news in helping us to raise money quickly to help save some animals of St. Martin who have the ability to have a new home in the United States. We are in desperate need of donations to help cover our expenses in saving the island animals. This mission to save the animals will be publicized by major NY media, US media and St. Martin media.

A plane has been arranged through Transport Animals (www.transportanimals.com) to transport twenty-two cats to a vet group in Long Island, New York. The vet will house, administer any needed medical care, feed and find homes for the cats. In addition, the vet will also provide 50% off the medical care for one year for the adopter of these cats. The cats will be doted on and loved in their forever homes, never again having to fend for food in the wild.

In addition, Transport Animals can also take several puppies. The puppies will be adopted through No-Kill shelters in Wisconsin and up state New York. These are areas of the US that have their animal populations under control and actually need puppies. The shelters will also provide whatever medical treatment is needed for the pups until they get adopted. We will get confirmation from the new owner of where the pup was sent. The pups will be cared for, loved and placed in their forever homes, free from a life of being dumped in cardboard boxes on the side of the road.

This is a one time opportunity for the animals of St. Martin. The transport date for the airlift will be late this week. In getting the animals ready to travel, The PAWS association is providing medical care for the 22 cats and 10 to possibly 16 of the pups involved in this mission. We are campaigning and trying to bring in donations to meet our goal of $5000 which is the minimum amount we need to cover the expenses and be able to save these 38 animals. We realize that this will not solve the over population of animals on the island and that sterilization is the answer to that problem. But until the over population problem has been significantly reduced and we have no more homeless pets on the island then we find that this is the best answer for these sweet animal beings who deserve to live a good life. Any amount that is donated over our goal needed to complete this mission will be put into our sterilization fund to help low income families sterilize their pets.

The animals need our help and we need YOUR help so that we can help them. Please help us to reach our goal of raising $5000 by the end of this week, August 1, 2008. Donations can be put in an envelope marked "Les Quatre Pattes/PAWS Airlift Donation" and dropped off at The Mailbox in Simpson Bay or please call me to make arrangements to meet and make a donation. Checks should be made out to: Les Quatre Pattes. It is only through your selfless giving that we are able to help the animals as we can do together what we can not do on our own. Thank you for caring about the animals of St. Martin and helping us to save them!

With Kindest Regards,
Shelley Crane
President

Actually I had just sent my donation in a few days ago so hopefully they will get it soon. Not much but hope it helps.

Hi all. First post here (apologize in advance for the length) - just wanted to update you all on the happy ending to this rescue mission. My wife received an e-mail in New York last Wednesday (August 6th), advising that, while the PAWS staff had proceeded to catch and obtain health certificates for over 45 cats and dogs for shipment to Teterboro airport in New Jersey on August 5, 2008, PAWS received a call from animaltransport the night before the flight, cancelling same on the grounds of expense. PAWS personnel, by now at their collective wits' end trying to find a way to get these animals to New York (quarantine certificates expiring) contacted several other charter companies but still too expensive. The e-mail my wife received sought volunteers to fly to SXM and to bring a cat back on the plane with them. In exchange, air and accommodations were provided. My wife and I volunteered and were able to bring back the last nine cats on our flight Monday. I understand that a flight attendant and her husband and her husband (flying separately) were able to bring back the rest. While I do not know how the dogs made it up here, I received e-mail notification that ALL the dogs and cats made it to New York. The dogs have been sent to a facility for behavioral training and will be placed up for adoption shortly but the cats are available now. If you have any friends in the New York area who would be interested in a SXM-expat pet, those not yet adopted are available for adoption at:

Roslyn Greenvale Veterinary Group, One Northern Blvd, Greenvale , NY (516)621-4010

And

Merrick Veterinary Group, 61 Sunrise Highway, Merrick , NY (516)379-6200

In closing, I believe PAWS is to be applauded for the success of this mission of mercy in the face of adversity. Look forward to my next visit to your beautiful island. Regards, Kieran
