Girls Holiday - Safety issues

Hi all ~ we are planning a girls holiday and recently have read some not so good reviews especially concerning crime on the island. Any thoughts? Obviously when travelling we must make wise decisions and not compromise our safety but is the crime rate on the raise? and what is this I keep reading on different forums that ppl are being robbed at gun-point while walking back to the hotels from clubs?

Any thoughts and places to avoid etc would be greatly appreciated.
