Do we need passports to travel from the US to the Dutch side?

you would either need a Passport OR if proof you have applied for your Passport and a copy of your official raised seal birth certificate and official id.

Originally you would have needed a Passport but because of the exteme delays in getting them out, the gov't backed up the date. If you don't have a Passport
check out the State dept website carefully for info, changes and updates.

Actually, I think you only need BC and ID to enter SXM. But you do need the passport stuff to RETURN to the states! US is the country requiring the passport, not St Maarten.

Having said that, they won't let you on the plane in the US unless you have the proper docs to get back in!

Thank you for all the information, sounds like the best thing to do would be to get a passport, we are going in October so I think we have enough time

I thought it was a moot point so didn't bother...but here it

U.S. citizens require one of the following:

A valid passport and a return/continuing ticket.
A birth certificate with raised seal and photo identification and a return/continuing ticket.
Naturalized citizens must show an original naturalization certificate with photo identification and a return/continuing ticket.
Green Card holders must have a valid passport and a return/continuing ticket.
