How strict is DUI policy on the island?
Are there sobriety check-points?
Can you be stopped for no apparent reason?

just to know whether I can have my glass of wine for lunch...

We were stopped 10 days ago in Marigot coming from the Dutch side at 9:00 pm at a check point. They can be very strict on the French side so it is wise not to drink and drive on the French side. Yes, we were stopped for no apparent reason too.

We, too, were stopped for no apparent reason...just south of the Le Galion Beach/Butterfly Farm/Club "O" road heading southbound. Asked for my rental car papers and driver's license. 3 "gendarmes" there for apparent back-up. Interestingly, they asked "when are you leaving the island"? I told them and off we went. Absolutely no clue why we were pulled over. Clearly a heads up...we don't drink so that was not a concern...you will be stopped if they care to stop you. spike.
