I found a really old SXM tourist guide. I am guessing it is from the 70s. Titled: St. Maarten - Tourist Guide for people who like to discover New Horizons In Fun. First question: I scanned in this ad (see below). Where was this supermarket? There is a little hint written in Dutch by my father-in-law... Second question: There are 8 hotels and 6 guesthouses listed (only Dutch side).

Lenny was in 1999. The hurricane was discussed on the Pleas for Help board. When the 2000 Hurricane Season came along we couldn't really use the Pleas for Help board at stormcarib anymore for SXM-chit-chat , so then I moved it here.

Yes, you guys are right. It's the Dawn Beach Resort in the foreground before it got badly damaged by Luis. Maybe someone has a current picture, with the new Westin. Should be quite a change. Annemariek thought it was so easy because it is the only S-shaped beach on the island... We often used to have lunch at the pool bar restaurant.

Don't pay too much attention to the registration date. I am 2005 as well, though I posted the very first message to welcome you all in 2000. I did a major software upgrade in 2005 that apparently reset all registration dates.

St.Maarten used to have it's own beer: Soca. I still have a bottle (empty ), it has a nice label. Maybe I'll take a picture of it and post it.

And another photo but not so old as Barbara's picture. However a lot has changed in this area... Annemarieke thinks it is too easy, but I didn't recognize it at first.

I think the browser is kind of confused since the images doesn't end in a normal image extension like .jpg. The image or file size doesn't matter. You can post megabyte files if you want. When I look at the source it looks fine as well. Strange indeed. Gert

Thanks for posting that Barbara. This forum actually started after Lenny in 1999. People kept hanging around on the Pleas for Help board of the website. When the next hurricane season came along, and I needed the Pleas for Help forum for its original purpose, we had to decide to either close the forum or continue it elsewhere. That's when we moved it here. My website was definitel

I was getting a bit lost with all the new messages posted, so I just installed a new feature: recent messages. You will see it as one of the "Goto:" options on most pages. Clicking on that link will by default show the 25 most recent message posted. There are some other options as well. It is still a bit experimental, so if you have problems with it let me know. Enjoy.

I am seeing a lot of new faces. That is great. A warm welcome to you all. For your information, just like on TTOL, we do delete posts and close threads as well. We like friendly and constructive comments. A simple guideline... If you don't think it is really appropriate for a six year old child to hear the kind of language in your post, you should think about rephrasing it in a mo

Hi Augie, Yes, indeed, the twins turned 6 in March. Good of you to remember! They are getting big kids now. They each got a new bike, their old one was getting too small already! Getting ready for the upcoming hurricane season. What a tragedy in Burma! Can you imagine that the 'government' hasn't issued any warnings!? People were apparently totally taken by surprise.

Hi Augie, Can you try again? The Forum now requires that users register with an e-mail address. Many old users didn't register their e-mail address which would give the error you are describing. I think I fixed this... Gert

Welcome to the new Friendly Island Forum... A new look... a new beginning! Lots of improved features when you register, like your own 'Control Center', with private messaging, tracking of threads, etc... If you have registered before, no need to re-register, but login here. All user accounts have been retained. Also new is that there is now gentle moderation. The moderator is a ve

I have just upgraded the Forum to the newest version. There are quite a few new things, but most of them will be invisible for you. For example the Forum should be better protected against 'spam-bots', which automatically can posts many messages (Barbara will be happy with this, since she is always removing spam posts). The most visible improvements are that there is now a spell ch

Hi all, After the deluge of 100s of automated post messages I have added another spam-prevention tool. If you are not logged in or are not registered then you will have to solve a mathematical problem before you can post the message. No worries, it is quite simple math, along the lines of 2+3=??? Hopefully this will reduce the workload of the moderators, Barbara and Neil, who have been do

NetworkIDL has a wireless network on the Dutch side, so you can access it from your hotel room balcony. There is another one as well, I forgot the name, which came up on my laptop consistently. NetworkIDL is $35 or so per week.
