Just saw this thread and the mention of the 12 Metre Restaurant closing a while back. It has now been reopened by the previous owner of the Dinghy Dock in Oyster Pond and one of the recent bartenders there. I have not been yet, but look forward to checking it out in a couple of weeks. Given the friendly atmosphere and good food the Dinghy Dock became known for over the past couple of years, I am

So sorry to hear about Bob. Something tells me his piece of heaven looks a little like Anse Marcel.

I really don't think an R plate has anything to do with it. I always wonder if there is a system in the French plate to denote rental as well (since every car I've rented had a similar letter combination starting with Z). In any case, a white Corolla or similar parked at the beach, Grand Case, etc. will likely stick out as a rental no matter the registration. Regarding deductibles

Within walking distance, you have Big Fish. Daniel's by the Sea/Busby's is also right there, but nothing special IMO (although Daniel's has a following). On the other side of Oyster Pond, Capt. Oliver's, Le Planteur, La Fregate, and Quai Ouest are all good. More casual/basic food options are the Dinghy Dock and Mama's Pizza. I would not bother with the restaurant

Hopefully, the OP's experience indicates that Tropicana has improved. My past rental experiences were quite different from the reliability of the cars to not being met at the airport as scheduled, etc. I personally would not use Tropicana again.

The prices on Momo's menu are in USD, so it eliminates the 1:1 or 1:1.25, etc. issue. IMO Spicy is good but there are definitely better in GC, especially since a recent look at Spicy's menu made it seem among the more expensive places there. I as glad to learn that Le Taitu has survived. Last year, I was worried they would not make it to the Radisson opening when they were closing

The main reason chairs are put out ahead of time is that customers will be lost if they come by and don't see any chairs at the ready for use. They either presume the place is full or do not want to wait. I've seen it happen many times when the beach boys underestimate the number to put out in the morning. Not to mention that dragging chairs and umbrellas through relaxing customers woul

I have shipped a number of times with Caribtrans. A full 20 ft. container runs about $2500 plus insurance. LCL runs $2.50/m3 plus roughly $50 Bill of Lading fee, plus 1.1% insured value. I have had nothing but positive experiences with the company both in their Miami and SXM offices.

Luc, the owner of 3 Palms Restaurant is also Canadian and has been on the island for a long time. One of the owners of Uncle Trouble's Tees is from Toronto. There are also Canadian carpenters, contractors, interior designers, etc. on the island. If you contact one business owner, he or she can likely refer you to others in the community as well. Good luck.

Bob, Silvanna was at Ti Bouchon a little more than a year ago, but left. I haven't seen her during the last several visits. I can't remember where Momo said she went, but I think she is still on the island. I agree Au Grain de Sel is very good. The Cote de Boeuf is one of the better values on the island. The only problem I've found is the demand tends to make them run out of

Barbara, that is the one. The owner of Busby's has apparently been making Big Fish's life difficult with the landlord for the past year. The first instance was the outside table issue, but there have been others since. I suspect this difficulty is part of the reason why Big Fish will reportedly be relocating at the end of the Season. I personally think there is plenty of business in the

Thanks Wendy. I have personally been boycotting Mr Busby's and Daniel's as a result of the trouble they've tried to create for another local business. Now I have another reason to keep my business from a place that is trying to maneuver all competition out of the area, but which also has no interest in improving its product to earn business over that same competition.

Really was a big system. It took the first full hour of my flight from SXM to Miami yesterday before we were out of the clouds at 37,000 feet!

I was working in the operating room in Northern Virginia. We essentially had a grounding of sorts. All on-going operations proceeded until finished, while all elective surgery was cancelled for the rest of the day in expectation of receiving trauma victims from the Pentagon. Later in the day, my drive home brought the awful view of billowing smoke from the Pentagon itself.

Contessa, they may want to consider renting a villa within Oyster Pond Estates. That community is completely gated in with on-site security 24/7. While nothing is completely crime-free, the neighborhood within the gates has experienced a huge reduction in crime incidents since the measures were put in place last year. In addition, it may put their mind a bit at ease that the security company guar

Hopefully, John will dismantle the deck he installed. It would be ironic if the landlord was able to use the very upgrade that he cited in terminating the lease.

Philippe, it's unclear whether these were back taxes from the previous owner, new delinquent taxes, or a combination of the two. I seem to remember around 2 years ago when SSBB was suddenly/briefly closed and its possessions seized for planned auction, it was to pay the taxes that had apparently been owed by the previous owner. My suspicion is that the blenders/freezers, etc. were not enough

Barbara and Pat, Le Gaiac was an experience. I believe the restaurant of the same name on St. Barth's is the transplanted version. Prices at Le Gaiac- SXM were pretty steep. I can only imagine they have climbed higher with the new zip code.

Some (not many) restaurants offer 1:1, but often, a close inspection of the prices shows that one establishment's 1:1 is really another's 1:1.3, or at least pretty close. More often than not, I think it's more of a marketing gimmick than a true savings on the final bill.

Barbara, I noticed that huge complex last month, not that it's easy to miss. Any idea what it is to become? Unfortunately, construction continues unabated even around Oyster Pond. The area to the area to the west of Oyster Pond Estates behind Casa Blanca is slated for 50 homes, while the large plot of land across from CB will supposedly close this summer. The buyer is apparently petitioni

Scary part is that Washington was an active police officer when the shootings and the assault took place. It was only after he threatened the second person that he was relieved of his commission. Unfortunately, the young guy that survived is paralyzed.

Good advice above. Also be sure to ask about the terms of the liability insurance offered, especially the deductible. This tends to vary pretty widely from place to place. In addition, if your credit card offers collision/comprehensive insurance, you have to decline the CDW offered by the rental company in order for the credit card's coverage to take effect.

Here is the official take on directing a local company as a foreign national... If you are not interested in working, my understanding is that it takes (among other things) proof of being able to support yourself for at least 6 months, proof of health insurance, and a whole lot of patience. It may be false information, but I have also been told that one must remain off the island while the

For me, Tomme (either de Savoie or Crayeuse) is nice and creamy but has body too. I also go out of my way to sample the various goat cheeses available on the island...much better than what I routinely find in the US.
