Thanks Barbara! When I saw his post over there, I knew he'd get better info here. Right now he's getting mis-information there, so your links will certainly be helpful.

Julius, I saw your posts on the other forum and I am glad to see you have found this one. I think you will have more success getting answers to your questions here, as this forum is run by people who actually live on the island. I do think you would have better luck getting a response if you start a new thread with your questions. I wish you good luck! Georgia

Boo Boo Jam has built something behind their place...we couldn't really see it from the beach, but they were advertising events for mid-December, right before we left.

We've used Europcar elsewhere, but never in St. Maarten. I googled, and found their website:

Saw her come in one day last week; Tuesday, I think. We went to Orient that day and it was already a zoo at 10 AM. We left and went to Friars. Tuesday and Wednesday are the huge cruiser days here. Oasis, which I believe is larger than Epic, comes in on Wednesdays.

It looks like the camera is zoomed in on it; you can usually see the beach.

We've never had a problem, but frankly we use our CapOne Visa whenever we can, just to get the cash back. We have used travelers checks to get 1:1 in restaurants on Orient and in Grand Case with no problems. The only place we've ever had a tc refused was at a gas station on the Dutch side.

Philippe, I never met Captain Oliver, but felt like I knew him through your stories and pictures over the years. My sympathies to you and to the Captain's family.

Have you considered renting two smaller cars? That might actually be cheaper, and will also give your group the option to split up if you want to do different things some days.

Norm, I think a couple of the birds got loose, but other than landscaping damage, everything else was fine. I think I read this on Facebook, though I really don't remember as I read so much during that time. The Zoo does have a FB page.

If you're going solo and not really into nightlife, then Orient sounds like a good place to stay! There are plenty of restaurants and bars, and you'll be fine there without a car.

The restaurants in Grand Case are not (with the exception of the lolos) the type of beach bar that you're describing. They are mostly elegant and expensive French restaurants. That said, the lolos, which I don't think close in the low season, do have the inexpensive local foods that you're describing. Orient is lined with beach bars, none of which is the shack that you descr

Kimbere....skip the rocks....please! If you don't like it neat, then I'll shut up and let you drink it however you want to, but please try it just like it comes out of the bottle the first time.

I'm so glad you decided to go with your hubby! You will absolutely love it! As for MaDouDou...you can mix it if you like, but before you do that, taste it neat. I think you'll decide not to mix it with anything!

I can definitely relate to your husband's excitement about the Challenge. Our first time, we sailed on Dennis Connors' Stars and Stripes, and I actually cried when I got assigned to that yacht. Your husband will understand my emotion.

The 12-Metre Challenge takes place offshore, leaving from Bobby's Marina in Philipsburg. They go where the wind is best. You can see the boats leaving and returning from the beach along the boardwalk in Philipsburg, but you really can't see the actual race from there. You might even be able to see from Divi, but I don't know about the view from there, so cant say for sure. Qu

There are more flavors of rum than you can even imagine. The best way to enjoy it is neat. It's normally served in a shotglass, but sip, don't shoot!

Like you, we usually use credit cards, and yes, most places do accept them. However, many places on the French side will give a favorable currency conversion rate for cash, sometimes even 1:1. We always make sure to have enough cash to purchase our meal just in case that's an option.
