Actually, it seems that when they be-ach about timeshares, it's fact-based on very substantive complaints that seems due to systemic problems with timeshares. There are some good timeshares, obviously, but that doesn't preclude the overwhelming number of legitimate complaints, in general.

The best advice is to just stay away from timeshares. Overall, it's proven to be a dysfunctional concept. It isn't as if there aren't any regular hotels.
