Hi, what are the best and worst areas in St.Martin? So far I have heard Oyster Pond is the worst, and Marigot is the best. The prices of apartment rentals appear to reflect this. In terms of crime rate, and how safe an area is to live in. Many thanks for your replies. Regards, johnnyforeigner

Hi, do you need a permit or permission to work on Orient Bay? I would like to start a business on the Orient Bay, but I want to know if you need to rent a pitch on the beach, or can anyone just work there? I know on some beaches you have to pay for a permit or pitch, is this the case in St. Martin? Many thanks for your replies. Regards, johnnyforeigner.

Many thanks for your reply Mathieu. Sorry for reposting the statistics. I din't realise that people would read all my posts on here. Tourism is now one of Ireland's biggest assets; after the collapse of the property boom. However the Irish government is killing off; pubs, nightclubs, and hotels by raising the tax on alcohol to unprecedented levels. This in turn is killing off touris

Many thanks for your reply Barbara. Generally speaking, is Marigot more expensive than the rest of the island? Or are the prices of apartments similar in other areas? The rent prices are similar here in Ireland, but we have a higher cost of living; and higher taxation. Are the rural areas much cheaper than the towns? Your advice is much appreciated. Regards, johnnyforeigner.

Many thanks for your informative reply Mathieu. It reinforces what I already know of St. Martin. Islands the world over are very similar; I live on the island of Ireland, and we have the same good and bad points to life here. I speak and read French. Please can you give me some links to the best forums? I am currently paying the same rent as you suggest here, but the cost of living in Irelan

Many thanks for your reply Philippe. Are rooms for rent advertised in the local newspapers? Or is it by word of mouth only? Here you see rooms for rent, and apartments advertised in the local newspapers. I suppose it is a case of asking around, and making contacts. I have previously found that when you find a job, you make new friends; and so you can share apartments and houses this way to r

Many thanks Philippe. The legal minimum wage here in Ireland is only 1080 Euro gross/month! That is before a 23% tax deduction! I know it is very hard to get a job in St. Martin, but at least the minimum wage is higher. The cost of living in Ireland is actually higher than St. Martin due to the high taxes we have to pay on everything. I think I would be better off living in St. Martin as the

Hi, Is it possible for a single man to rent a room in St. Martin? As opposed to renting a 1 bedroom apartment. I was wondering if people share accommodation in Marigot? I would like to keep the living costs down while I seek work. Thanks for your replies, they are much appreciated. Regards, johnnyforeigner

Thank you for your advice Philippe. It seems as if working in St. Martin is the same as working in any other part of the EU. I have worked in the UK and Ireland, and St. Martin would be very similar. You just have to pay income tax, part of which is paid into the EU social fund. It would be the same if a French man came to work in Ireland, you just register to pay tax here. Some of it goes to

Thank you for your advice Philippe. I am receiving unemployment benefit from the EU social fund, and can transfer that to any other EU country for up to 3 months while I seek work. EU citizens have the right to claim from the social fund for up to 3 months in another EU country. Then you have to return to your country of origin in order to keep claiming social welfare from the EU social fund.

Thank you very much for your advice Philippe. I really appreciate your point of view from the perspective of someone living there. It seems that the unemployment situation on St. Martin is the same as Ireland. We have the same thing here, may EU citizens come here looking for work, then leave quickly when they realise there is no work. I have thought about Baleares Island, but my research sug

Hi, where do you register for work in Margot, St. Martin? Is there a job centre where you should register? Or can EU citizens just apply for jobs in the newspapers? Thank you for your replies. You help is much appreciated. Regards, johnnyforeigner

Hi, as St. Martin (French side) is part of the EU; can EU citizens claim social welfare from the EU social fund? I know in France EU citizens are eligible to claim state welfare. I just wondered if the same applied in St. Martin? Thank you for your replies. You help is much appreciated. Regards, johnnyforeigner.

Hi, I am an Irish EU citizen considering emigrating to St. Martin (French side). Please can someone give some up to date information regarding how bad the job situation is in Margot? I am aware that the French side is swamped with EU citizens looking for work, so there is high unemploymnet; but are there any posibilities to find work if you are willing to do anything to survive there?
