Thank you, Neil....

And Annie, me too......

And I remember when:

They built the paved road 'over the hill'..........

There was no La Belle Creole - in fact there was nothing at all on that stretch of road......

You rode around during the day to find some of the more remote dining venues and made your reservations by writing your name in their carte because most places didn't have phones.......

They floated todays Simpson Bay 'draw bridge' into place.......

It was a huge treat to have breakfast at Pinocchios, shop for a few hours and finish the day with Risdon's ice cream by the pier while all the shops closed for their siesta.....

Beyond a few private homes, there was nothing on Simpson Bay Beach but Marys Boon, La Pavillion Restaurant and the cement factory.......

Building 90 and the Hillside at Mullet weren't built yet.....

There was literally one road around the Island and half of it was still dirt....

They hadn't finished the first building at the Pelican and we were approached on Mullet Beach to buy a timeshare when we'd never even heard the term before...

The lolos in GC were still barrels on the side of the road........

The sunsets from Bertine's were to die for....

And Marks was in the middle on no where (and yet we managed to find it way back then,,,,) as opposed to in the middle of the parking lot.....

And St. Maarten truly was the "Friendly Island" and you couldn't imagine the word 'crime' being used in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentence.

Ah, yes - I remember it well.......smiling smiley:

Our first trip was in early 90's, not much of this sounds familiar. Except Mark's Place was in cul-de-sac up the road from Hotel Mt Vernon, and yes we made a few trips there.

But can any of you remind me of the name of where I had some great ribs, likely in 1992, just into Simpson Bay by the take-off end of the runway? I think the decor was wooden picnic tables, it was maybe in the ground floor of a 2 story building, and the ribs were outstanding. Sorry, but that's all I can remember....

It sounds like the Philipsberg Rib House which had it's main place of business for a while upstairs over something on Front Street.......yes? No?

If its the same place, I think they were just down the block from Lynettes and Clayton's Sports Bar in Simpson Bay and had featured a peanut dipping sauce they served with the ribs that was very, very good.........

Thanks Pat. That may well be the place, I just do not remember.

I do remeber Pedroès from that era, as well as a gentleman called Bamboo who got us on a day trip to Anguilla.....

The Rib place closed and then it was Don Carlos and then when that closed it was Bobby's Seafood Galley (or something like that) and now it's Bada Bing!

I have some old pictures somewhere...must find them.
I remember the floating barge bar in Marigot by the cemeterie, the Calabash bar in Maho, Beef Wellington at David's. I remember when Marigot beach was wide and sandy and very crowded on weekends. Long beach was empty most of the time. Cupecoy was also wide and beautiful. Dining at the Concord in suits, ties and fancy dresses. It was a different world back then.
