Rental car

Any suggestions and experiences with car rentals?
Please provide nos. or e-address.

Last year we tried Thrifty ... thought the rate to be good.

The car turn out to be a "Spec" ... tiny wheels, no trunk to speak of, they left the back security cover off of it; so all your possessions are in plain view. Didn't pay much notice but should have.

Subsequently....we got broken into, lost about $60 worth of lobsters & conch plus a cooler & binoculars (at Marigot Weds market at about 10 AM broad daylight). Cost an add'l $400 plus to repair that POS. All plus losing 1/2 a vacation day at the police shack.

The French cops actually recovered the binocs for us ... I was very surprised.

Need a real car w. trunk for 7 days.

thanks for any suggestions.

Actually you need a car with no trunk and don't leave anything in it. They will break into your trunk too.

If no trunk, they can look and see that there is nothing there and leave it alone.

absolutely good point Elaine. I was at Grand Case Beach Club last night visiting some friends and as we went out the exit gate, we noticed a sign reminding people not to leave anything in their cars.
I wish more hotels and car rentals would give out that warning.

I agree too with Elaine.....last week 2 new Ipads went missing....both locked in the trunk at OB during broad daylight..It's just not worth it!!

The only problem, without a car the trip would not be complete. Go and enjoy.

Dan,

I feel bad for the people who lost their Ipads but didn't anyone, including but not limited to their rental agent, tell them NOT to leave 'stuff' in their trunks?

As many times as we've rented from him and as much as he knows we know the lay of the land, Lesley still gave us the prepared script about lock your cars anywhere with the exception of at the beach and don't leave anything in them anywhere at any time.......

It's too bad this happened and I hope this wasn't their first SXM visit because that would sure leave a bad taste in someone's mouth, I'm thinking.

Respectfully,

pat

What do you do for car chairs for a baby?

Bruce,

I cannot speak from personal firsthand knowledge on this, but two things I've noted:

1. When my daughters' children were small, not all that many years ago, they left the seats in the car and had no problems. I guess car seats are not what the average island thief is looking for, but no guarantees on that one.

2. I know many here and on other sites buy or rent beach chairs for island use and I don't think I've ever read about either one being targeted in car break-ins.

Not to say it couldn't happen but I've not heard about it.

I think the 'leave nothing in your car, not even locked in the trunk or glove compartment' is meant for the more valuable items - luggage on arrival while grocery shopping or stopping for lunch, purses, wallets, cameras, jewelry and difficult to replace documents like passports and such.

In all our years I've never had anything taken from our parked car although our car was broken into a few years ago at the beach. Thankfully, we listen to Lesley and never leave anything in the car. And now we leave it unlocked at the beach, too, because we felt terrible that the little creeps damaged his car.

Ask your rental company what their policy is on this because I believe they may have different thoughts on this one issue.
