would it make sense for a saint martin resident to import a car from the us?
how much would that cost approximately, and how much taxes would i have to pay?
Car price could be around 3-5000$

NO Import taxes, Dutch side.

Ship from Miami suggest Bernith Lines 305-633-7711. Cost depends if you want it shipped in a container or as deck cargo, I suggest in a container and fill up the car with other "stuff". About $1,200.

Or can I just pick it up on the Dutch side and register it on the French side?

NO customs or taxes on the French side either. You just need to pick up your car with your bill of landing at the shipping company, makes sure that you have all the imports papers with you and clear title from the US with the purchase invoice on your name, then you will need to bring the car first (after insurance of course..) to the technical control. They will pass the inspection and identification of the vehicule, then to the "Hotel de la collectivite" for registration and "carte grise"! There you will need to also show proof of (legal) residency, a carte de sejour" if you are a non EU citizen, original invoice of the car, technical control, proof of address, and 150 euros....

You WILL need a "Right Of Export" certificate from your state of title.

THis gives you the OK to export it with a CLEAR or OK TITLE.

Hello, I am just in the process of getting my french license but have the right to drive for a year with my american license, can i import my car from the US and park it until it gets insured?

I believe you need an international driving license if you are resident.... your car can be insured within an hour so I don't see the reason to "park it until". Before You receive your car at the terminal you take all the import papers and tittle from the shipping company who imported your car, you go to an insurance company, you insure your car awaiting registration plate and numbers, and then you follow the process of registration but at least you can drive..IMO

Well the problem is i don't think i can personally register and insure my car without a french license as i have a us license that is not transferable for a french license. An international license will only translate your license but this is also only valid 6 months or a year maximum. Can be frustrating if you have seen the code de la route recently

Another quick question for you phillipe since you have been here for so long, this may solve my problem for the moment , my mother has a french license could i register the vehicle for her here? I'm sure i can get a proof of address like a lease or something

If you are a French citizen, you do not need to show prove of driving license to register a vehicle on your name. You need to show prove of residency, and passport, plus all paper from the vehicle itself proving it is yours...

Hmm so i would just need to register it in my name and wait till i get my. License to insure the vehicle . Would i be able to register it on behalf of someone maybe i should go to the hotel de la collectivite office and ask?

I got insurance at Nagico using my US License.

No custom or import taxes. But you have to have all your legal documents ready with your name, etc.
