So it is sounding as if I need a security escort. Is it really that bad? Perhaps I should rethink my visit.

Jane,
you have something about 5000 to 6000 people (if not more) walking Ft Street everyday...That's like saying to stay away from restaurants in Buffalo NY, beer warehouse in CT or shopping mall in Miami because there were some shooting at some of them! if there are places to avoid, this one is certainly not one of them...If you tell me "upper Prince Quarter" or "Union Farm" then that's another story

Clarkee,
things happen here like everywhere else in the world because you don't have such perfect safe place (except Merida, Yucatan...LOL! @ Barbara ;-))) and you always will have some negative minds (or people who feed on negativity) who have some tendency to discourage other to do what they can't (or won't) do themselves and thus for their own reason or personal agenda... It is not that bad, just use commonsense

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Clarkee, don't feed the trolls please. You'll find that a lot has changed, like Barbara, Elaine and Philippe already said. With the development, there is also more trash - unfortunately. Still nothing compared to any town of the same size in either Europe or the US.

JANE, YOUR POST ARE BEING DELETED BECAUSE THEY DO NOT ABIDE BY THE RULES OF THIS FORUM WHICH ARE :"My comment is constructive and friendly." AND BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT , AS ALWAYS YOU ARE TRYING TO STIR CONTROVERSY, AS ALWAYS YOU ARE TRYING TO TURN ANY SINGLE THREAD YOU ARE POSTING ON INTO A CRIME THREAD, AND AS ALWAYS YOU ARE DEROGATORY AGAINST THE MODERATORS OF THIS FORUM. THERE ARE OTHER FORUM AVAILABLE TO YOU FOR ACTING LIKE THAT, WHERE YOU WILL FEEL MORE AT EASE THAN ON THIS FRIENDLY FORUM...
THE ORIGINAL POSTER POSTED AND ASKED :

I will be coming to the Island after a very long absence of more than 25 years. I hear that there have been major changes...more people and development, but nevertheless can't wait to return. So I am now going to have to ask some very basic "tourist" questions...I will be staying in a villa in Terres Basses so where do you recommend I should shop for food? Should I bring Euros?
NOTHING IN YOUR POST HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH HIS QUESTION AND YOU DIDN'T BROUGHT ANY CONSTRUCTIVE RESPONSE TO HIS QUESTION... ONLY TRY TO STIR CONTROVERSY AND TURN THE THREAD INTO A CRIME THREAD LIKE I SAID BEFORE!!!...
THE DAY YOU WILL DECIDE TO POST A LEGITIMATE "CONSTRUCTIVE AND FRIENDLY COMMENT" LIKE THE VERY VAST MAJORITY OF THIS BOARD, YOUR POST WILL NOT BE DELETED...

What are the lowlands? And where are they?

kimbere, the lowlands is a stretch of land between the dutch side cupecoy area and marigot. it is along the coast and the area is where thre are many private homes.
the road is dark at night and not well traveled and there has been crime on that road at night.

Thanks Barbara! I don't imagine we would need to be there at night. Will mainly stick to bars and restaurants, and only do any real driving back to Little Divi. Sounds like in order to drive on it, I'd really have to seek it out.

So since I am staying in Terres Basses in a villa and I will be right on Plum Bay I guess I need to be cautious about driving into bith the Dutch at night. All of the maps that I was able to get on the web really do not give much info about the roads. All I can see is Rue Baie aux Plum and Rue de la Falaise. Are these the road that are unsafe? Are safe is Rue Baye Lounge and Rue Rosseau?

No, all those streets (Rue) that you mentioned are inside the very well secured gated Community of Terre Basse...The portion of the road where some incident had occured are on the outside of the secured community in a particular portion of Route N5... If you are staying on Bay aux Prune (Plum Bay) and want to go to the Dutch side, you will go into the direction of Rue Baie longue. At the end of Rue Baie Longue, juste before entering the Route N5 (which is the main road going around the island) you will have to go through a security check point. Once you are out, you make a right and less than 3/4 of a mile away you are on the Dutch side. Once you pass the border into Cupecoy and then the golf course, it may be dark because I don't recal the this portion of the road being lighten up at night, but it may be different today.
Now if you want to go to Marigot, from Plum Bay, you will go into the direction of Rue des Falaises aux oiseaux.. At the end of this street, again just before entering route N5, you will go through a security check point. Then you make a left and you are about 1.5 mile away from Marigot. I beleive that the sensitive portion of the road would be in between those two check points: on the left of Rue Baie Longue check point, and on the right of Rue Falaises des oiseaux check point, and if you take the direction I just gave you, you shouldn't have to use that particular portion of N5...
When you'll go back home, you will have to re-enter Terre Basse and clear those security check point... Terre Basse (French Low Land) is an heaven for Millionaires, so it is VERY well secured, beleive me...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Yes there have been some recent crime incident on a portion of that road at night, and I didn' traveled it recently, but I lived many years in the Low land, traveled it basically every single night and don't recall it being dark. The only Dark area I remember was from the border into the Dutch side in the Cupecoy area. At that time, once you pass on the French side the road was pretty well lighten all the way to nettle bay. did that changed and now there is no road light anymore? I am asking because you are not the first one mentioning it is a dark road and since I am now on the other side of the "hill" I am curious to know what happen...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Just to clarify - Cupecoy is fairly well lit and will be bright as day once the new road and sidewalk project is finished.

The road through the golf course is also fairly well it. No dark spots.

Thanks Elaine, and what about the portion between the border and Marigot? Because as I said in a previous post, I remember from when I was living in Cupecoy that it was pretty well lit, but now I am reading a lot of comment that it is dark, or am I misunderstanding the comments ?

Kind Regards,
Philippe
