Ok Ok Ok
it's Simpson Bay village in 1962.
Neil guessed it first..at least publicly!
Phillipe got it privately on his second guess
so now who gets to put the next picture up?

I was going to suggest the Marigot waterfront at what is now a man-made seaport. Is that LaVie en Rose way, way in the background?

Ah, but in looking back I see Wendell already publicized Fort Louis.

yes, its a very old picture of the Marigot waterfront
that's what it used to look like
and, pat, that would be the old building before la vie en rose was there

I remember that area, vaguely these days, but I do remember it.

Long before Hollywood and hi-tech changes came, the water front was just a stone's throw from those balconies - well, to be exact (in my memories anyway), a sidewalk, a narrow road and another walkway and the water so maybe a stones throw for a good arm........

The market place was such a pleasure back in those days when the fishermen would come in and tie up their boats full of the colorful catches of the day. No souveniers - no tee shirts. Lots of bananas, plantains and other island root crops and if I remember correctly, much of it from some of the other near islands, along with some of the native artistry of the people of the island at the time - beads and lace works. It really stands in my mind as an 'island market place' as opposed to what it's morphed into these days. Todays market is still fun, don't get me wrong, but the one of years ago was far more interesting to inexperienced eyes.

I don't recall the days before LaVie en Rose, but I seem to recall a few other restaurants further down the one lane road and closer to the water, where now the parking lot exists. And wasn't there was a walkway through to what was then one of the best restaurants on the island that was actually entered through the next street back? It had a lot of local art displayed on the walls and how I wish the name would come to mind. Does anyone out there remember any of this? I would say very late 70's - early 80's?

Respectfully,

pat

That's it, Barbara.

We were there the first time - I think in the late 70's and it was my first 'big girl fancy' restaurant - you know, the ones where the menus are only priced for the host? I had no clue as to the prices but I knew it was expensive and I recall ordering only an entree. And what really sticks in my mind was how beautiful and how small it was when served.

The other thing I remember about that first dinner there was how hungry I still was when we were all done! eye rolling smiley

We were guests of friends that first evening (friends who had been there many times, thank heavens and who knew what to expect when they invited us to their little party) and never did learn the total of the check, When we returned a few years later, I remember how shocked we were at the total of the bill. It wouldn't be much of a shock in today's world but back in the 70's those prices for food were beyond my belief. eye popping smiley

Respectfully,

pat

Paul and I LOVED that restaurant and were so sorry when it closed. Patrick was a great host...I wonder what happened to him.

The picture of Marigot especially touched my heart. There was a lovely bakery down near the corner and we always had to buy two baguettes. One to eat while shopping for fruits , vegetable and fish and one to have for dinner.

Do any of you remember a restaurant in Marigot called La Colonque?

La Calanque... Yes of course it was where Arawak is now, accross the street from the Bar de la Mer on the opposite corner...
Close to Le Poisson d'or there was also "Le Nadaillac".. top restaurant with French specialities from the south west of France... that was the good old time!

and since we are talking about Marigot in those years, here is a little gift, no clue, but surely some of you will remember...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

wow, great pictures philippe
seems just like yesterday

La Calanque was one of the best restaurants.. they had a banana duck that was to die for.
I remember a funny story about dinner there. we took a friend of ours there.
he was visiting the island for the first time.
We had an absolutely fabulous meal followed by a delicious desert and excellent French coffee. (so we thought)
My friend, who was a coffee connoisseur, was in love with the coffee.
he raved about it.
He wanted to know what brand they used and how it was brewed.
after much discussion between the waiter and my friend, who couldn't understand what the waiter was telling him, the chef came out and said in his heavy french accent:

Oui,Monsieur, zee coffee... she is Maxwell House!
