Fish Day 2009

Bill and I had the pleasure of attending Fish Day in French Cul-de-Sac on Sunday.

It's an annual celebration of local traditions and culture. The higlights of the day for us were the music and, of course, the FISH! Great meals to be had here. I had a wonderful grilled snapper cooked right on the beach! We also enjoyed the music of the Gunslingers - a young steel pan troupe from the island. Also the Jolly Boys, who I have been looking forward to hearing for along time. A bunch of "experienced" St Martiners who are working to keep traditional island music alive.

Here are a few pictures and videos. Please excuse the poor quality - it's a little point and shoot. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

It did get hot when you were out in the sun. My one complaint was that there were not enough seats for everyone. Once we left the main tent to get our lunch, we were stuck out in the sun with no place to sit. All the little food tents had seating, but no where near enough. So we left earlier than we would have otherwise. There was still lots of music we would have loved to hear.

If there really were 10,000 people there like the DH says, I can't imagine it! When we left at 3ish, there was perhaps 1000.

It was a really fun day, and we'll do it again next year. But get our lunch early and not lose our seats under the big tent in front of the musicians!

Thank you Elaine. You certainly made me homesick.
