Barbara, I wish I could post my picture of behind town from 81. My picture was taken from behind Portofino's.The sand/area wasn't as well kept as yours. I also have a picture of the back of town with the cruise ship passenger dock. One of the small ferry boats letting out passengers is shown.

Barbara, I agree it was a nice small beach until all the old tires and other junk was left there.

Andrea

The Nov. before Luis an "engineering" firm dredged sand out of the ocean to make ground for the "new cruise ship pier". Since they made a hole in the ocean and sand being sand ( ie the Great Bay beach) filled up the hole. Then Luis came through and move some more sand in the hole. The construction company also had a large crane blown off its tracks on the new pier. Sent divers in the water to cut it up and removed from the bottom. The footings of some of the buildings were being undermined by the ocean and was feared of colasping. As was a restaurant did 3 weeks after we ate there on July 4 1996. There was no Great Bay beach at all.

Andrea,

It's a great picture, for sure, but one that most people who knew the island then would just as soon forget about.

Respectfully,

pat
