This post is really a question for Philippe..

There's a thread on another forum about the proper way to pronounce Grand Case. There are as many answers as there are posts . Philippe, can you write it phonetically for us English-speaking folks?

Gran Cazz ... I believe. French Phonetic is very different than English Phonetic, and the signs indicating the sounds are also different... So Dan is right...: Grand Case will be pronunced like Grand Rapid but without "d" at Grand, and "case" will be like if it was ending with one or two "z"

OK..does the "a" in Case sound like the a in bag, or the a in ah?

Actually Marc is right... I am not very good at phonetic and how do you translate in phonetic English some French sounds but the addition of the "h" before the "z" will do it.. I am not sure about the "h" in Grand thuogh, but like I said I don't know much about phonetic English re-transcription... But there is one thing you can be sure, it is that you do not pronunce "Case" as a "court Case"...

Well, Babelfish translates it as "large puts", but somehow I don't think that's quite right!!

No Georgia, it is not "large put"... it is a very specific definition

yeah close enought... a "case" is a simple basic habitation. It is used in Africa as well as in the French Antilles or where ever French Creole is being spoken. So it would mean pretty much that... "great House", "Large House" "Big House" or even "Large Cabin" since "cabin" maybe a translation of "Case" as the book's tittle "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was translated in French as "La Case de l'Oncle Tom"...
