Molly Smith

Hi all - I'm hoping that 1 of the long time residents will be able to tell me who Molly Smith was & what she did to have a piece of land named after her? I understand that that is the name of the point of land to the South of Grand Case. No particular reason for the inquiry other than curiousity & a love of the history of St Maarten/Martin! Thank you.

No...two different "Mary"
Mary's Boon was named after (for) Mary Pomeroy who vanished with her plane on June 5th 1990 (that I am sure...), and Mary's Fancy was named after Mary Van Rodmondt (That, I believe...)

Kind Regards,
Philippe

April 18, 1956 Peter Byram, an ex-Manhattan decorator came to SXM to open the Pasanggrahan for Erik Lawaetz. Peter Byram and Kit Osborne (a Californian actress and the first woman to obtain a residency permit on the Dutch side) in the 1960's opened their own small hotel, Mary's Fancy in the Dutch Cul de Sac.

The Mary Fancy estate was home to the Van Romondt family up until the Island Council bought it in 1948.

Erik Lawaetz was the brother of Frits Lawaetz the senator of St. Croix in 1907.

yes, but that is more recent history.
The van romondts owned it long before.....in the previous century and Mary's Fancy was the name of the old plantation house, and we don't know where the name came from.

We were always told that when the plantation was completed and the owner's wife arrived on the island, she was very homesick and did not like the island. The husband tried to make her love her home by importing wonderful furnishing from all over the world. What ever her heart fancied, she got. Thus the name Mary's Fancy. Now, this is my Grandmother's story. Not sure how true it is, but a story anyway.

Diederic Christian Van Romondt inherited the estate from his parents :
Diederic Charles Van Romondt and Ann MARY Van Romondt (born "du Cloux" also spelled "de Kloe" in Dutch)
That's what I thought... and it may explain also what Jimandi was told smoking smiley

Philippe

males sense to me.
Being married to a van romondt descendant, I probably should have looked up my van romondt history
thanks P for doing that
BTW, we have a genealogist in the family who has been doing extensive research on the van romondts.
This is her blog.
it's very interesting

Sorry, did not mean to hijack this thread.
Very interesting about Mary's Fancy.
But the questions remains:
Who was Molly Smith?
Where exactly is the property in her name?

No need to apologize for the tread being "hijacked" at all when interesting stories are told - thank you all smiling smiley Having followed this forum for a while, I posed the question hoping that Barbara would be 1 of the ones who would know the answer. I guess piquing her curiousity too is the next best thing!winking smiley
