Phillipe, Thanks for posting the photo's. I 'am pretty sure they are from the 80's because I see the new ticket counter addition to the terminal building on the right side.I also loved the roof top section of the airport restaurant. That was the original plane watching area while enjoying a few drinks. Many of us used to have lunch up there waiting for our planes to land. I always parked our car in that huge lot across from the stores.Forget about parking in that area now.I didn't see anyone in front of the runway in that photo. In those DAYS very few tourists attempted to stand behind planes while they tookoff. HaHa. And the SSBB wasn't established. In those DAYS you can still see the water from Airport rd because there weren't enough buildings to block the views.Thanks.

My first trip was in '83 and I do not believe the airport was like that then-the restaurant was totally enclosed (perhaps that is from 80 or 81) We used to go to that restaurant for dinner even when we were not travelling-the food was that good

IMO, that photo of the rooftop section is from the late 80's & early 90's. I heard the rooftop section closed after the hurrician (95).Those pictures are from 83 and older because I see the new ticket clounter addition on the right side of the terminal building. As I recall the addition to both sides of the terminal began in 82 and completed in 83.On the other side they added the immigration/luggage areas.......Barbara, Do you recall when the additions to both sides were made.Remember it was a yr or two after the first bridge was rebuilt. There used to be a few car rental windows next to the entrance of the terminal before they built the rental offices in the parking lot. The car return was in the lot across from the terminal in those DAYS too.

Ummmm... not early 90's... I arrived in 1990 and Cafe juliana didn't had its canopy over the terrasse anymore. The terrasse was still open to public though but no Canopy, so they are from before 1990.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Philippe...that aerial is awesome! Royal Islander is there but like you said, Maho Hotel was not yet. What I am amazed at is the large body of water within the airport area.

this pond was only filled recently, to extend the tarmac and make more space to taxi the plane... I think it was in 2003 or 2004... maybe Dennis can confirm or infirm, nt really sure about the year.
On that picture, it is interesting to see that the Atrium was already being built as well as Port de Plaisance.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

I remember when construction began for PdP and after it openned. It wasn't as popular as they expected. That lot across from the stores made parking a pleasure in that area. Now we need a picture of the area before the stores were built and Casino Royale when there was only sand.

Anyone remember the Carib music Bands (metal drums) that used to play in back of the terminal building when tourists came out of the planes.Remember when it took 15 minutes to drive from Front st to the airport.

If I remember correctly those bands were there on Saturdays and I think they gave away rum punches too. Where both those pictures from the same year? I do not see the rooftop restaurant in the aerial picture. Also is that the Atrium in the top right corner??? If I am not mistaken the Royal Islander was not built until after 1984 (I know it was not there in '83 when I stayed at Mullet-there was just a shell of metal that was supposed to be a Perillo hotel but had been abandoned) If we could figure out what model cars are parked in front of the terminal we might be able to figure out a year

When we stayed at Mullet in 81 I remember seeing mostly sand between the airport and the entrance to Mullet.I purchased a watch from the lobby jewelry store at the hotel in the photo. The roof top section is under the canopy on the right side. To me the photos look as though they were taken at the same time.Perillo was sending tour guests to Great Bay Hotel in those yrs until it closed.

In the second picture (the aerial view) I do not see the canopy-what was the name of that hotel-it looks like it is where the artium is now.

I guess it is the Atrium. The photos are from after PdP was built. I recall they began construction in the late 80's. We used to pass PdP on our was to LaHabitation in Anse Marcel during those DAYS.
