Do you know what today is?
Posted by: Barbara1 (Moderator)

Today is the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Luis slamming into St. Maarten. Anniversary? Well, it is nothing to celebrate but it is something to remember.
I am sure every person who lived through Luis remembers all too well.

this web site shows the track of Hurricane Luis.

and here is the report on Luis from NHC
[www.nhc.noaa.gov]

and for those of you who really want to remember, here is a video
personally I cannot watch it
[www.youtube.com]

This video shows an awesome view of Luis' eye from space

I agree and I'll never forget the Mullet Bay area and all the buildings without roofs.

Yep, B, I was thinking about this last night. Every year when sept 5 or 9-5 rings in my head it immediately clicks. I can still recall the feeling and anticipation as it approached and the gutwrenching feeling I felt as it hit. And, the lack of communication back then..... thus the creation of this site. I remember we had local ham radio operators trying to get info for us.

How horrible it was.thumbs down I was there the week before and left on Sept.1st!! How's that for timing? I was doing business on Anguilla and returned to SXM for a couple of days R & R and remembered how intense the sun appeared. When I was in Anguilla I commented that my skin hurt from the sun (I wasn't sunning on the beach just walking around resorts). An 'old-timer' said that meant something bad was about to happen! Geezus, don't think that didn't bother me for the rest of my time there!! When I got to SXM for my R & R I noticed the same feeling.....can't explain it, just weird. I used extra SPF. People on the beach were talking about TS Luis but didn't have a clue how destructive that TS would become. I returned home on the 1st and the TS was already strengthing.........the rest is History!sad smiley

BTW....there's a book about one family's life thru Luis. It isn't a great book but a day to day accounting of what they went thru and a little family history thrown in. Hurricanes, Paradise and Fairy Tales by Kim Norris Samuels.
Ironically, when I was reading this book in April on the beach and the characters seemed familiar and lo and behold I knew Kim & Ron back in the day when I stayed at the Divi. Lost touch with them after Luis and here they were in a book!

Barbara.....yes, I did know them. Ron was a liquor salesman if I remember correctly. We had a mutual friend, Linda from Boston. In fact, she was in the book. She's another story for another day! Someday we'll chat about that.....winking smiley

BTW....are they still married? I noticed at the end of the book Kim didn't mention him, although throughout she referred to him as the 'man of her dreams'.
Sometimes they can turn into nightmares!!grinning smiley
