Thanks for an usual island to describe! Very enlightening. A while back I had read some reviews that made it out to be so wonderful and I guess for the experience, it would be worth it if possible to get to but it doesn't sound like the kind of island I would go to unless I wanted to take a true step back in time. I also guess, for the literary romantics, this would be a dream come true.

Through Windjammer cruises(now defunct),we have been up and down the chain of the lesser Antilles over the last 20 years.Except for a few isolated spots( St. Barts, Iles de Sants,Mustique in the Grenadines),one has to be aware of crime potential all over and not just on SXM.The crime problem is widespread in the Caribean. However,SXM has more possibilities of what to do than elsewhere in the area.We live in SXM for an extended period of time, but we would never make it if we lived on Nevis, for example as we run out of things to do after 1-2 weeks..On balance,SXM is about as good as it gets south of Florida.

John,

Interestingly, Dominican Republic was once on our list of places I wanted to visit, and then a family member moved there for about five years. After hearing the stories he told, it fell right off my radar screen. He described the poverty and the begging and stories of guards protecting the bathers on the beaches and the immigration problems with so many people fleeing from Haiti and all in all, it just didn't have the same allure anymore. One of the things that always captures our interest is the ability to travel freely in the location we're visiting without fear of what might happen to us by doing so. This just wasn't the thing to do, or so we were told, in DR. And then, just about a year ago, friends told us about their recent vacation experiences there. I didn't get the name of the resort, but they were ready to find a new TA after their experience. And they are very well seasoned travelers who spend beaucoup dollars a couple times a year on their family vacations so I'm thinking the description you were given was probably right on the money based on the things they shared with us. In fairness, I've spoken to many people who go to the DR and are content to do the AI thing and stay in one place but that would be a major deterent to me.

You asked about interesting islands so let me share those that we really enjoyed the most, beyond St. Maarten and Anguilla and you already know how much we love them.

We've only been to Barbados once but thought it to be an absolutely spectacular place to visit. The beaches varied from location to location but I remember thinking how beautiful they all were and how different one from the other and the coastlines were all phenomenal. It's on our list of places to which we'd love to return, someday. There are so many things to see and do, from the rough and tumble Bathsheba coast line and the lighthouse out there on the coast, to the supposed pirate caves of Crane Beach, or so the legend goes as we were told, and the sugar cane fields and the processing plants and the Monastery in the middle of no where. Dining in the Gap was fun and of course, we had to try the fried flying fish which the island is known for. Bridgetown was about the only part of our trip that I hated - too busy and too much traffic but where have I heard that before? There's a rum distillery and horse racing and botanical gardens. If you're not faint-hearted, driving the island was in itself an experience but fun if you're comfortable with it and know what you're doing.

And then there is Grenada - an incredibly beautiful island with rain forests and inland mountain falls and lakes, and warm and beautiful people. We explored the nutmeg processing factory and the cocoa processing plant there - I never knew that Grenada was known for this. We enjoyed the history of the island and our small part in it and once again, the feeling we were able to wander the island on our own was a nice thing. So much to see and experience there.

And lastly, as already mentioned, Bermuda, and what's not to like there? Much more upscale ergo more costly but very clean and such beautiful beaches to explore and talk about a year round golfer's heaven....

There are so many other places to see and experience and I'm thinking each of them has something different that makes them each special in their own right but the bottom line is most probably that the best ones will be the ones you experience personally and offer the pleasures you most enjoy.

Respectfully,

pat

NO? Then I certainly wont be going there. I knew the Caymans had issues but never heard about Turks and Caicos..

Wow...thank you to all who responded! I think that with all that was written, a few of us have actually learned a little in the process of sharing. To me it sounds like Barbados would be the choice then if we were to take a break from SXM since it seems to capture most of what we would want not that I am planning this in the near future but I always like to keep my options open, even for a change of pace. Now someone said that there were no casinos there but as recommended, I searched the net and found a travel site that advertised a resort on that island that offered slot machines. Now slots are not my preferred choice really but would do if in a crunch and bored stiff so thank you again to all and Pat...thank you as always for detailing your notes so beautifully.

And may I add that what makes it even nicer is there were no obnoxious people making idiotic assumptions on points that were made about an actual experience and calling it ridiculous (I still can't understand some people's motivations). Thank you all for your truly courteous and thoughtful notes.

Edit: I thanked everybody but the post came up about 5 threads before this one...don't know why this is happening??????

We didn't care for Barbados and didn't like our hotel experience. The manager kept us waiting outside for well over one hr until I figured out what he was up to.We were very tired and wanted to checkin and get settled. He was stalling guests outside the hotel to film a promotion video for the hotel. He didn't ask anyone if THEY were interested in being filmed either. After I gave him several choice words and told them what nerve they had for trying to scam us & others. We couldn't wait to leave but had 3 days to go.Bridgetown is a large city equal to many in the states.Nowhere near the CARIB feeling of other island towns.Driving is opposite side (British) and we didn't rent a car like on SXM because not much to do except hangout at the hotel/beach.We had a problem with a taxi driver trying to drive us in circles to increase his fare.I had him stop and we got out and found another taxi to take us back to the hotel. Not a very fun experience and no desire to return there.good luck

We started many years ago looking for the "perfect island." In our travels, we visited (looking for a second home) the Keys, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Caymans, The DR, Puerto Rico, the USVI, the BVI, Anguilla, St. Martin, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, as well as islands in the South Pacific, Europe, and Asia. We chose St. Martin. Enough said.

I lived in SXM for 2 years and just left a few months ago. One of the main reasons why is that the crime is getting worse and worse, and it got to a point where I did not feel safe even in my own home. That's really no way to live!

As for the person who asked about Turks and Caicos, on my quest to look for another island to settle, I found Turks to be a bit too underdeveloped although it is growing. Grace Bay in Provo. is amazing, best beach you will ever see, and he food is great too, however, I decided against it, because other then beach and food, their is really nothing to do. The nightlife is not developed....

If you are looking for a week getaway, Turks is nice but anymore then that, you may go nutty.

Interesting posts...so different from the others and I do not deny that they are untrue. Thanks for the additional info. Regarding Barbados, it kind of gives me the impression that although there are many places you can find beauty, the residents and workers could very well make or break a vacation on this island. So sad that this should have happened to you.

Yesterday I was reading Dear Abby (as usual grinning smiley ) and saw this so I will enter this as the quote of the day and as a test, who said it...

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter"

How true!
