SXM vs other islands
Posted by: John (---.nwrknj.east.verizon.net)

On another board I wrote a short account of my nephew's experience in the Dominican Republic that I heard last night over dinner. My nephew is not island savey and has only been to 2 islands. He doesn't come on either of these sites so he was not trying to make SXM to be the do all nor end all of islands but this is what he had to say and what I wrote on the other site...

-------------------

He and his friends had gotten a great deal for a trip to the Dominican Republic 2 weeks ago and so he just came back from there and told me this...

Where he stayed which he swore was a really nice resort, he was told when he got to this resort that they would not be responsible for anything stolen from their room up to a certain $ amount. He could not drink the water which was absolutely horrid and smelled like it came out of the toilet... He drank beer the entire time (not so bad for some people but he hates beer) so he wouldn't have to have ice or any type of drink that included water (and that included coffee ) and even with the food he ate, he had to be very selective. There were guards with guns all over the place. He could not venture off the property without proper escort. He needed to go to an ATM in the evening and after "talking" to the guard (spoke very little English but understood "ATM") the guard went over to a resort contracted taxi driver and spoke to him for a short time. Then he pointed my nephew to the cab and my nephew got in. The driver took him to this dark place where there was a cement outhouse looking structure. While he went in which was like a small maze, while literally shaking and thinking he would never get out alive, the cab driver stood outside this cement structure with a machete guarding the entrance, until my nephew was finished. When he returned from his vacation, his wife said he had lost at least 10 pounds.

Needless to say, he has seen what an island with real crime looks like and will never ever take for granted the freedom SXM gave him while they were on the island for 2 weeks.

I truly understand that SXM has it's issues and when it hits home like with Bruce and Kim as well as some others here, it does impact my train of thought but not enough when comparing her to other islands and what it still has to offer, especially the freedom to roam the island and feel as well as meet with the different cultural people without experiencing what my nephew experienced. And that, my friends, is MY opinion and should not be discounted.

-------------------

NOW...after writing this which was the TRUTH as there would have been no reason for him to lie nor exaggerate (including about the water which he saw them refill from the tap), I was told that I was trying to trash the DR to make SXM look good....hmmmm....talk about blindsided people....how utterly ridiculous. I wouldn't go that route..EVER. Why in the world would I make this up???????????????????????????????????????? I have better things to do than play games.

I wrote this to show that there are islands out there that appear to be fantastic but when you get there, that is not always the case and certainly makes SXM look like Disneyworld. Everything I wrote was exactly, if not missing even more things, about his trip.

So....let's hear the good and bad of other islands but don't forget to include whether there was freedom to explore and not be subjected to an all inclusive because of the dangers lurking outside the gates. To me that is not a vacation.

And I will start the ball rolling by saying that Bermuda has to be in the top 5 of my preferred islands compared to SXM...except it really has no casinos which is my evening entertainment, as well as not having all year round hot weather. Other than that, Bermuda is breathtaking and they do allow freedom to explore outside the boundries of the resort.

I am not surprised... I always wanted to visit DR but William did years before we met and swore he will never go back!.... He was there only since two hours that he was robbed from his money CC and passport in the street by a.... pregnant woman! Or by what seems to be a "pregnant" woman, maybe she wore a pillow below her dress... However he couldn't get out of there as fast he wanted...

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Did a week in DR. You definitely can't drink the water or use ice from ice machines. Spent most time in resort, Did take taxi to play golf and go to a nearby casino. Highlight was my wife hit slot machine for $1800. I don't think I'd go back, but it was inexpensive. You get what you pay for.

most of the resorts in DR are all inclusive. it is not the type of place where you go all about wandering on your own.
that is what SXM could become if we don't start getting better at controlling crime.

Hi Barbara...I would assume that you've been to a few islands in the Caribbean....which ones did you like for their flexibility and which ones did you find confining?

Barbados is fantastic. I believe the beaches are better than in SXM!

I have not heard much about Barbados so could you let me know, aside from the beautiful beaches, what the island has to offer? I am not one to sit back in the evening and would need nightlife. Also how's the food and is there anything besides all inclusives on the island? Do you feel secure day or night? Info like that....

My guess all incl. are in the minority on Barbados. Good nightlife and restaurants, just no casinos. Extremely friendly people. Suggest you go to tripadvisor and check out the various resorts this beautiful island has to offer.

I agree with WOW.... Barbados is fantastic!
I don't know if their beaches are better but they are beautiful. There is lots to do there and the food is very good.
I do think SXM is more fun though. The Bajans are more reserved than we are here. LOL

I felt freedom in all of the islands except Trinidad and Jamaica. As bad as the crime is getting on SXM, it is not nearly as bad as on those two islands.
The other Caribbean islands have similar problems as SXM does, but I did not feel uncomfortable on any of them and I have been to most of them.

I like the quieter islands myself. Bequia, St John USVI, Tortola BVI. Anguilla.
Barbados was good. Nice beaches, good restaurants and bars.

they are all different.
Cheers

PS I know LOTS of people who would not return to DR.

I know that most of you cannot travel to Cuba. The resorts are all-inclusive, little or no crime against tourists (Thanks to the govt regime) BUT the food on the resorts is absolutely disgusting. I have spoken to many people who have travelled to Cuba and we all agree, the beaches are beautiful, Havana is stuck in a time warp, many cars from the 50's and still running.

They have the Cuban Convertible Peso which is the only currency you can use, you must exchange on Cuba, it has no value when you get home, banks will not exchange.

Having said that the charter flights are full and the price is very inexpensive.

You either like it a lot or you visit once and do not rush back.

My thoughts

Cheers

Michael

Michael
you know, I never think of Cuba, but I have been there and I loved it.
It is very different.
The poverty is sad, but the people are nice and the countryside is gorgeous.
I was not so impressed with the beaches...from what I saw anyway.
The food is fantastic..if you know where to go.. good local Cuban food is the best..but not at the hotels.
Havana is definitely in a time warp. Those old cars are amazing!
and bicycles..lots of bicycles..
what a beautiful old colonial city!
