THIS ISwhy many who know the island and have been coming for a few years doubt that things will improve given the current state of the politics and policing of the island. When so many of the cops and pols are crooked to begin and are arm in arm with each other how can they solve the problems your having when to often they're the problems? You need to bring in new faces who arent connected and then you have to take a hard look at the sentencing laws and the problems might start to get corrected. Might.

of course, this always goes on with police everywhere also.
It is a known fact that some of the most violent people in our societies are the police. I read about these kind of things all the time in the NYC news reports too.

IMHO, it is ridiculous that it happens..wherever it happens.and the bad seeds should be removed.
That said, the problem with crime here extends far beyond the "bad seeds" and love triangles and has a lot to do with politics unfortunately.
hmm.. politics?
politicians = bad seeds?
get rid of them too?
ya think?

Unfortunately, in the US as well, it is a rare case for an police officer to go to jail when firing shots during an altercation such as this or any criminal act, except in the case of murder where they are suspected of being outright criminals and not on duty. They are usually suspended without pay until a hearing is conducted and even then, it is rare that they go to jail.

Aside from the fact that it is an internal decision, it is more importantly and rarely thought of but to put an officer in jail is almost like giving him/her a death sentence. Putting an officer in a jail of criminals that he has sent there is like feeding him to the lions before his true sentence.

I am not trying to justify this action but it is a logical one.

Interesting articles...Now that guy certainly deserved to be sentenced in that manner but remember that at the time of his offense he was a "former" officer and was currently a security guard. It truly sounds like he went "postal" by mistakeeye rolling smiley.

If he was still an officer when this happened, I would have bet my life that even if he was found guilty, he would have not been sentenced for that long and put in a minimum security prison to serve his time rather than hard time.

Again, I am not defending the actions of some officers but being in the force does offer them a lot of protection, whether they are right or wrong.

Scary part is that Washington was an active police officer when the shootings and the assault took place. It was only after he threatened the second person that he was relieved of his commission. Unfortunately, the young guy that survived is paralyzed.
