Insurance for rental cars

Can anyone provide some guidance on how much we should expect to pay for insurance -- CDW & Liability -- on our rental car? The Rental companies online don't provide much in the way of that information.

If you charge your rental on your credit card and your credit card honors collision Insurance on International land, then it is free. The liability should cost around $5-6 per day.

If you plan on charging your rental car, check with your credit card company ahead of time to be sure. If they don't (some don't) then you can send an e-mail to the rental company and ask them.

Hopefully you will be using a reliable local company. And it's best to get a car with some dings in it. We always ask that the spare tire and hubcaps be removed. If we get a flat, we're not going to change it anyway. We'll call the rental agent and have them bring a tire with them. That way, we're not responsible if they are stolen. When you rent from anyone on the island, make sure you point out the dings and dents prior so that you are not responsible for them upon your return.

Good advice above. Also be sure to ask about the terms of the liability insurance offered, especially the deductible. This tends to vary pretty widely from place to place.

In addition, if your credit card offers collision/comprehensive insurance, you have to decline the CDW offered by the rental company in order for the credit card's coverage to take effect.
