No good coffee in the stores? Say it ain't so!

The caretaker of our villa advises us to bring our own ground coffee with us. He says that there's nowhere on the island to buy really good coffee. Given the gastronomic nature of SXM, I find that hard to understand.

How about it SXM-ites? Is this likely to be the case and should we grind our own beans before departure??

no good ground coffee here? I beg to differ. That's ridiculous
There is Douw Egbert, an excllent Dutch coffee.
Carte Noire coffee is excellent also.
There is Santo Domingo, a wonderful coffee from the Dominican Republic.
I am sure there are others also.
I know Le Grand Marche has a large selection of different brands, some of which I am not even familiar with.
They even have Dunkin' Donuts coffee at Sang's in Philipsburg.
and the french side? all kind of exotic coffees...
Match supermarket, and US Imports by the bridge in Marigot sell a full line of fabulous coffees.
Does your villa manager actually live here?? smiling smiley

I agree that Douw Egbert's coffee is wonderful and I believe it was you who turned me on to it many, many years ago! It's the smoothest yet full-bodied coffee I have found on the island.

Their coffee is most likely from Africa where the best coffee is bought, like Kenya AA beans. I used to work in the coffee industry for many many years and learned alot. IMHO Kenya AA is superior to any coffee in the world, even Blue Mountain and Kona.

There is very good coffee in SXM. I agree with Barbara and John. Santo Domingo is an espresso grind but I use it in an American Style coffee maker. Yum!

FYI. If necessary. many of the brands mentioned above, are also available as
de-caffeinated. My wife is not able to drink regular coffee, due to heart medication. We have never had a problem in this regard.

We use to bring Jamaican Blue with us but found the coffee very good on the island, and have not brought coffee with us for about four years.

Get the coffee from Santo Domingo. It is very tasty and much better than folgers

Thanks everyone. We were wondering what the caretaker was thinking. Maybe he doesn't drink the stuff. :-)

never heard of or tried Egberts. Is it expensive? Kona coffee (pure not blend) was about $30 a pound in Kona in Jan.
