Le fromage, it's not just Brie. What are your favourite cheeses that are available on SXM?

Gouda. Oh that incredible gouda. I never knew there were so many cheeses. All the typical American cheeses but wait. It just gets better and better .Dutch and French cheeses too. All kinds and varietys. If your a cheese eater your gonna suffer serious arterial shock. Is there still a cheese fondue place in the Sandy Ground area? There used to be one a long time ago.

Gouda and Meersdam! It's amazing how different they taste, there. Is it the cheese or because it's being devoured in SXM?? Curious minds want to know!smiling bouncing smiley

We're renting a house and will eat out only occasionally. So this gives me the opportunity to unleash my inner glutton. I'm on the look out for the types of cheeses that are hard to come by in North America such as the unpasturised soft cheeses.
My faves, in no particular order are:
Morbier
Roquefort
Stilton
Good aged Cheddar (I am British, after all)
Brie & Camembert and similar
Chevre, preferably not the crumbly, chalky variety.

Am I likely to find these in Le Grand Marche or US Imports? Or should I seek out the specialty fromagerie in Marigot?

I'm not so sure about the good aged cheddar since it is not a personal favorite but you should be able to get all or at least most all of your requests at either of the major superettes you named.

I visited Gouda once and saw the marketplace where the cheeses were weighed. It's a really nice town. Gouda is much easier to eat than it is to pronounce.

BigMaclain,
I would definitly go to Match Howell center in Marigot first to find the largest variety of French Cheese, for both "fresh cut" or already packaged.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Thanks, Phillipe. Is there any particular fromage that you like and would recommend?

My favorite is the cheese with the black covering. It comes in big rounds.
It's like a creamy harvarti. Yummm...so good...
I also like the brie and camembert. Match has a wonderful cheese dept. and the ladies are very helpful with choices. I love US Imports too! Great Cheese dept.
Now, where's that baguette!!!????

The name of the Fondu place in Sandy ground is Le Chalet. To die for Fondu and Racellet. See link: [www.lechaletsxm.com]

For me, Tomme (either de Savoie or Crayeuse) is nice and creamy but has body too. I also go out of my way to sample the various goat cheeses available on the island...much better than what I routinely find in the US.

Raw-milk camembert - not even legal in the U.S. but oh so good!
