AA cutbacks and economy moves....

Hey!

Just back from down island and spent 3 hours in Miami yesterday.

Chatting with some some senior AIRBUS AA Captains and co-pilots.

The large A-300 is getting a bit pricey to run to a lot of Caribbean destinations and you may see smaller planes and fewer flights by the end of the year as AA allegedly are going to park some planes.

I would imagine some layoffs are expected as well. This may mean higher fares.

An interesting thought was shared: If every departing aircraft was "tugged" to the take off point with only the auxiliary power unit running, the savings would be immense. One 777 Captain told me they burn a little over a ton of fuel in the "conga line" on most departures.

My math sucks, but that's a lot of fuel!

Also heard American Eagle is cutting back big time from SJU to SXM and other island destinations.

Watch out for Jet Blue and Spirit fares getting competitive to fill their planes.

Interesting tidbit. I wonder if that is from taxiing or from waiting in line to take -off. Sometimes you seem to wait forever to take-off.

I bet AA could save plenty of $$$$$$ if they stopped paying those golden parachutes to corp executives who don't have a clue how to treat passangers.Remember yrs ago how they fought for deregulation from the GOV.How they said compitition would be great for them and everyone would save lots of money on fares.IMO, its more there fault then the fuel costs.

Hey!

Further news in the ORLANDO SENTINEL Friday:

400 jobs in PR to be cut

Flights by AA out of SJU reduced from 38 to 18

American Eagle flights reduced from 55 to 33.

AA has 1200 workers in SJU, a 1/3 reduction in staff.
