New, must do restaurants
Posted by: gert (Moderator)

We are coming to St.Maarten in July for a couple of weeks. I haven't been there in two years! What are some of the new restaurants we should visit? We are looking for 'child friendly' and for 'baby-sitter' time!

I have to make sure to visit Captain's Olivers. Haven't been there in a long long time. Old time favorites are Le Cottage, Bistro Caraibes, Cigale, Bistro Nu. Breakfast always good at Zee Best, Marigot Marina...

Any other new ideas welcome!

Gert,

French and Dutch side? Upscale, budget, or combination of both? Favorite cuisines? Maybe you can get some ideas on DineSXM smiling smiley

Thanks for a great forum!

Quai Ouest on the far end of Capt. Oliver's marina.

Not new, but fantastic is Ti Provencale in Grand Case.

The Stone, located in Simpson Bay, is also very good.

Ti Bouchon on the road to Cul de Sac.
The breakfasts at Big Fish and at Mr. Busby's are very good.

Is the Stone open now? We READ it was good. We read it was open. Then we read it wasn't so good because it was smokey. Then we heard it was closed. Then we heard it spent a lot of money on reopening but didn't have the documents to be open. Then we read it was permanently closed. What is the status now?

Read that the Stone is closed due to permit issues. I'd add Halsey's on the Dutch side. We really liked Big Fish for dinner otherwise no new ones to add in the last two years that we've visited. Batazu gets high marks from people but I'm not crazy about the location so I doubt I'd eat there. No view, no ambiance for me.

The Stone was reported to have reopen on 5/15/08.

Hey!

( From a recent post but back a few pages)

Let me just offer our favourite eateries. After many trips we always end up going to those places where service, prices and selection add up to a GREAT meal. This is sort of a TOP 10 for a main meal.

BAJATZU
PINEAPPLE PETE
TOPPERS
MARK'S PLACE
PEG LEG PUB
CHESTERFIELD'S
HIDEWAY at LA VISTA
SKIPJACKS
PARIS BISTRO
RARE ( after a casino win)

A few breakfast spots par excellence:

LA CROISSANTERIE ( Marigot Marina)
KISSING FISH ( At the Summit Resort)
SPINNAKER ( At the St. Martin Yacht Club, open to the public)
Ric's Place ( In Simpson Bay)

The Stone reopened last week. There is no smoking indoors at that restaurant.

Also new since Gert's last visit would include Topper's and Tijuana Yacht Club, and perhaps Halsey's in Simpson Bay, Jo's Steakhouse (heard they're pretty busy for lunch) behind Lal's near the airport, French Touch at Caravanserai, and Passage to India in Maho.

Another new restaurant I've heard good things about, unfortunately not bookable online yet, is Fusion - in Philipsburg.

Gert, the above suggestions are excellent and will keep you quite busy, as well as full!! I'd like to suggest that you try Cap't Olivers' buffet on Sat. night. This is the best bargain on the island. PLUS, you get to see Phillipe, too!!>grinning smiley<

Rita, Ti Bouchon is French. Momo, the owner is worth the price of admission aside from the fantastic food. He'll make you feel as though you are eating at his house. The prices are in dollars and tend to be about 15-20% cheaper than the better restaurants in Grand Case, with the quality being every bit as good.

The Stone was closed for 3 weeks for renovations. I hadn't heard about any permit delays, but that is always possible, particularly is a building permit was required. The only people I know who said they won't return are smokers, since as mentioned above, smoking is not permitted within the inside dining room.

Our 12 year old granddaughter's favorite restaurant in March was Le Montmatre, and her 9 yr. old brother's were Pineapple Pete's and French Touch. At French Touch he went down to the sand and played while we were waiting.
