Just a follow-up to my earlier post on 12/18/08 and Philippe's question about the "curse" on the property. From what I learned in my time there (1985 to 1988), the Bluff Island was a quarantine site for incoming ships to Marigot in the early years of St. Martin. Only in the time of La Belle Creole was there a bridge to that island from the peninsula. As such, there were possibly a few quarantined sailors that passed away on that island. Accordingly, there may be some grave sites out there and hence the ill feelings about the place by the locals. I've spent many years working and living in the Caribbean since and this is certainly plausible as a reason.

RT, if you ever get the place going again, I'd certainly welcome a chance to put in some more time there. Should anyone want a copy of the article from the early 70s, I will scan it and send it to you.

There was a time, around 1990, that the property to the west was cleared for a "marina" type condo project with the entrance from the Nettle Bay side.

Some of the original drawings for the ENTIRE project were in a cabinet near the General Manager's office.

I lived there from September 1988 to the Summer of 1991.

RL, if you ever get it going again I would be interested in returning.

That "approved marina project" was on the Bialac property that adjoins La Belle Creole but does not include our property. It has long expired and parts of the Bilaca property have been sold off recently.

Dude. Funny who you run across while researching old projects. Ever hear from Richard G. or anyone else from the day? And how is Karen? I thought the "curse" was because there was a leper colony on that little island and not because it was a quarantine spot for TB or some other dread disease.

I was only on site for 9 months but it seemed like an eternity. I think the hotel wasn't successful simply because of the general tropical malaise and bad bad bad timing. Who knows?

IMO, part of the problem were the rates charged per night.They're rates were about $250.00 a night during low season and $350.00+ winter high season.Many other nicer hotels with better beaches, rooms, and location.

I would love to walk on the grounds. Last time i was in St Martin a cab driver told me about the owner of the place and ghost stories related to the owner (who was originally a maid working there and later inherited the place) anybody knows anything aout this story?

Gert, IMO,the old Pink Tower would be the location for viewing St. Barths but I think the mountains would block the view.We'll never know.

Great view of the lagoon and Anguilla but not St. Barths.

Yes, I was doubtful of the "St. Barth's view"! It would be nice to see something happen with the place... if for nothing more than more employment opportunities for
people living on the island.
