I have worked in the telecommunications industry for 20 years, both landline and wireless - engineering and project manager.

My husband is retail management. Right now, we own our own store that he runs, but we are trying to sell it so that we can move.

If you have been in the Education field it would be easier since the island is in great need of Teachers, but in your field it maybe more complicated because the job market is pretty filled already. You always can try to contact local companies like SMITCOMS or CARIBSERVE, or even UTS. I am sure you will find the link to them if you google the name of each one follwed by "sxm".
Good luck, but be ready to accept the fact it maybe difficult, a very long process, and maybe it will not work the way you wanted or expected. Immigration laws are very difficult, and take in consideration that the island is allready over saturated with people who have (had...) the same dream, and that the administartion is not considering it as very favorable to the island people.
Why not try the US Virgin islands, or even Puerto Rico? there you won't have any immigration restriction since it is American, and you will still have the Caribbean feeling (and weather..)

Kind Regards,
Philippe

I read about the couple who desperately want to move, and the people who gave their advice. My husband and I are almost in an identical situation. With the economy now it's really bad. We are giving are house back since in went down in value so much, and the payments were terribly high! So until our daughter is out of school (another 2 yr)we also would like any information on how to move there before we reach retirerment. Were 45 and 46, and would like to rent until we can find the perfect place to buy, or build on. Love any ideas anyone has. We moved from Palm Springs Ca. to FL. in 1996 12 yr. ago to open a restaurant. Which was fantastic for 3 yr. but we sold at the perfect time. My husband is a man literally of all trades. He built our resterant. But currantly works as a department head in a good convelesent hosp. (medical benefits are great) and I have a few medical problems that prevents me from working (fibromyalgia, cfs) 8 yr. ago from infected breast implants I ended up with bacterial infections! Long story, anyway our dream is to move and somehow retire there, as soon as we can. My husband is able to work in many fields. Thank you for any advice you can give,
Sincerely, Karrie

it is hard ..almost impossible..to move here and work.
you can move here as retirees.
but in order to work, you have to get someone to sponsor you and it is a long complicated application proess.

Karrie,
Just from a practical standpoint I would think you (coming in with medical issues) need to live somewhere with an elevated quality of medical care. I am not insulting the care in SXM but there have been reports that indicate that this no MRI machine on the island and it appears that for anything serious most people have to go off island for treatment and I would presume that is costly. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Bettenan,
There is an MRI machine on island and I have used it several times. The results are read by a team of radiologists in New Jersey. Unfortunately it is at the dreaded Dr. Dennoui's clinic.
I have no idea why all docs on island dislike this man but the MRI machine was very important to me for diagnosis of spine infection.
That said, I agree that if she has serious medical problems, she needs a location with better medical care.
I had to go off island for 6 weeks to deal with the infection (which I got in a US Hospital!).
Cheers, sort of.

And if I am not wrong, there is also one on the French side too, in concordia, and the results are read locally by the specialists operating it.

Kind Regards,
Philippe

Irina,
Sorry, I stand corrected. I know there was post on TTOL a while ago from someone who got sick (or spouse got sick) and said there was no MRI machine..I do not recall the details but they had quite a bit trouble getting treatment/diagnosis for something rather serious. Nobody came on and disputed this fact, so I presumed it was true.
It's something I pay a lot of attention to, since I some medical issues that are of concern, even for a vacation trip.

Bette

Bettenan,
That's because the Dutch docs won't send their patients there. It's insane really.
They would prefer the patient suffer rather than send them to Dennoui.
And yes there is one on the French side. Sorry Philippe, I forgot. I had a sonogram done on the French side also.
Cheers, I think.
