"Dengue fever is spreading across Latin America and the Caribbean"
Just saw this. So far is it a big problem on SXM?

Augie;

I am an agnostic dyslexic who questions if there really is a dog.

Augie
We have not had too many cases here..as least none reported. I do think however that we do not do very good mosquito control on the island, so that is not good.

Hey B,
Remember when they used to spray? What ever happened to that? And remember when Linda had dengue? She was miserable but not incapacitated............
Cheers

spray? here? LOL
yea, they do it about once every 2 or 3 years. there is always some story...either the truck breaks down or they are all out of "spray"'..the spray that kills the mosquitoes but probably poisons us all. :-(

I haven't heard of many this year. It is not severe here. so don't worry.
Just make sure you keep your self protected. You will be fine.

yes, bug spray is fine.
use the mosquito milk that you can buy here. it is very good. and the skeeters are mostly bothersome early in the morning or at sunset.. try to be inside then if you are really worried.

Barbara...we swear by the mosquito milk. I think I have gone through four bottles of it while on island for a month. I have found it works better than Off. At least for me.

We visit St. Martin once or twice a year. We just returned in early December 2007 and my wife became ill one day later. Initial diagnosis was flu, however after days of sickness and blood tests it looked more like Dengue Fever.
Its a nasty virus that will knock you to bed for at least a week. I suggest seeing you doctor and monitoring your blood counts.
Since we (and many friends) have been to SXM and Caribbean many times before and have never contracted the virus, it appears my wife was very unlucky. Bring the DEET.

Go to the TTOL board for more info about dengue mosquitos on SXM. An Environmental Health Officer for the BVI gov't who is responsible for dengue prevention has posted some VERY interesting and pertinent info that anyone going to SXM should be aware of. The poster name is Israel.

Hmm? Did I detect a little sarcasm?

For the record, I'm not a TTOL regular - just getting back up to speed on SXM since I haven't been there since 2005 and scheduled for 2 weeks in March. And, by the way, I went to SXM the first time in 1978 so I'm not a newbie who thinks they know everything.
